Heck, I enjoy just shooting iron plates. Just hearing the "clang" is good, especially since you don't have to go put up new ones when you get tired of counting holes. But exploding stuff is better. I once had the opportunity to shoot some reactive targets AND demil some old fire extinguishers at the same time...fun and saved us taxpayers some money.

Stu, if you're not working AND I can make it whatever day Bear decides to do this you're welcome to ride down with me. I'll even throw an extra rifle in the truck for you to shoot.

I really poured through statues to verify their claims, so I'm not parroting. I've read it myself, I don't really want to try to find it again right now. Our statues were written with liquid explosives in mind, but as they are written, they would apply to tannerite. Now, it being technically illegal in CO doesn't mean you will get arrested or prosecuted for it. With as widespread as it is you are probably ok.

Tannerite is basically an ammonium nitrate + aluminum blend, with small amounts of (I forget what it is, zinc based I think) to encourage more flash although it isn't a critical component. The energy of the projectile hitting it does not matter quite as much as the shape. You need something similar to a boat-tail to drive the particles together the right way to get it to detonate. There are some custom mixes for rimfire and what not that are a little easier to set off. It is possible to make it yourself, no, I will not tell you how. Properly mixed it should have a detonation velocity of around 7,000 FPS if memory serves. That is a lot less than things like C4, but it still classes it as a high explosive. If you're an idiot, it can hurt you, but I'm sure you know that already.

Oh lastly, it's not an exp. that works well "en mass". If you put say twenty pounds of it together you're going to be disappointed, because its not going to be even close to 4x as large of an explosion compared to a single pound. Not sure what the optimal weight is, probably depends on what exact round you are throwing at it. It isn't much though.

    Better safe than sorry

I recently contacted CDLE OPS Explosive Division and I was told Tannerite and the like did not require a permit for personal use. Maybe that has changed.

Takin' all the fun out of this man. I've never had a problem with anyone including local PD here, in TX, or in TN when firing this stuff off and that HAS been with PD and other alphabets present. I do disagree with your last paragraph though. A 5lb mix IS a lot bigger/louder than 1lb mixed. Maybe not mathematically 5 times bigger or whatever, but it definitely is a bigger boom and more cloud.

Short version is that at the Federal level that are restrictions on the civilian detonation of materials in excess of 4oz. This means that those 1/2 pounders that you're popping off could be construed as violations of current BATFE regulations. I can't quote chapter and verse, but I'll see if I can contact the EOD gents that were discussing this to get further details.
    Anyother partypoopers out there?! BOOOO.

Tannerite does not, other explosives yes.

Someone did mention it (Foxtrot I think) but it is possible to make it yourself at home... however, doing that is dangerous if you don't know what you're doing and it can be illegal depending on the way you procur and mix your chemicals... Anyways, y'all have fun - I'm still gonna use 'em and have some fun. Peace!

I think a group shoot when the weather allows is a great idea!

    Take my Man Card too.
All I need is someone like OneGuy67 ( ) dragging me in for an explosives charge.
