I had a question about a gun I had bought one time, i called the PD from a pay phone (before cells were common) and they ran a check, it was clean, no big deal.
If they would have said its stolen where are you bring us the gun, i could have just hung up the pay phone and walked off.
They did not ask for my name or anything when i called to have the serial # checked.

I would say for anyone else wanting to do this, just call from a pay phone like I did and if they want personal info from you can always hang up and no issue.

If it was stolen from another state its a better chanec the PD will have it destroyed then returned if you give it to them.

Though I got a killer deal on a 1911 colt when I was in high school. Kid said the gun was given to him by family and mom wouldn't let him keep it. I gave him 200 bucks for it. Got to keep it for a couple weeks. Shot WAY better than the lama I had. Found out from a friend that a guy in town had a colt stolen. Left it in an unlocked truck overnight. I showed up at his house and asked if he did lost a colt. He said yes. I then asked if he had the serial number to which he looked sick and said no. He described it down to the T. That's when I probably looked sick and handed him the gun over. Told him the kids name and where to find him. Then to my shock the guy said wait here and came back to his door with 200 dollars for me. There is a 4 inch 686 smith I hope finds its way home someday.

all you have to do is call the local PD and tell them you are looking at purchasing a gun from a guy who is selling it and want to make sure it is not stolen. they run the serial number, it comes back one way or the other and if it is indeed stolen tell them you will not be purchasing the gun.

cool that the guy gave you the money you would have been out.
I would have beat the hell out of the kid that sold it to me.
