    Default Did you know...

...that if you hold the slide on a semi-auto pistol while it is fired, you can stop the slide from cycling, turning it into a single shot?

My buddy is a Krav Maga practitioner, and he showed up here over the summer with this claim. Said his instructor claimed it was true but had never tried it himself.

The video is the second try for each of us. The first attempts were full of hand wringing and worry, and we forgot to turn on the camera. It's a non-event. No cut up hands, no powder burns...nothing at all. It was pretty nerve-racking to do, but we were painfully careful and it's nice to know it can be done. Note the empty case falling out of the chamber when the pistol is cleared after each attempt.

    Pistol is a 1911 in .45ACP.

If the slide isn't cycling, what happens to all of the pressure and gases?

Seems to me that this could cause damage by not letting the gun function as it's intended. (Plus, I just enough of a wuss to not really want to try holding the slide - at least not with bare hands.)

All the gas and pressure just goes out the end. No biggie at all.

I have done it several times. Good for contact type shots where you dont want the slide to move out of battery.

I've done it. You can get a thing for the Beretta to turn it into a single shot. It is just a brace that locks the slide shut.

The idea is to make a suppressed pistol quieter without the action moving and forcing ALL the gases to go through the suppressor. I'm reluctant to try it with my CZ though as it has an exposed hammer. EDIT: Just watched the video. I'm going to try that out next time. When I did it, I just put the palm of my weak hand on the back of the slide and applied pressure. This way looks a lot better and the exposed hammer won't be an issue. However, I just checked my compact, and my hand won't really fit and I'd be afraid of burning my hand.

There are also certain Models of Semi-Autos that can be "Disabled" of sorts by forcing the slide rearwards from the front, even if a little.

I don't recommend trying this Unless you run the risk of being shot anyways.

I think that is every semi-auto. If you pull them out of battery about 1/4", the trigger mechanism locks up and they won't fire.

Its also my understanding that if you grab the slide of a modern semi auto and push the slide slightly out of battery it won't function at all (as most are designed not to fire out of battery for safety reasons) thus keeping it from even being a single shot.

    EDIT: Bleh! Instaposted by TWO!

Also, if you grab the cylinder of a double action revolver (assuming the hammer hasn't been cocked) and it'll bind it up to where it won't fire.

Doesn't matter the size of the semi auto pistol. Just get your hand wrapped around the slide and receiver any way you can while pushing the muzzle away from you and down. Then you aggressively and repeatedly apply the knuckles of the other hand to the shooters face until they let go of the pistol. Spin it, rack the slide to rechamber a round, and point the dangerous end towards the bad guy.
Mom's comin' 'round to put it back the way it ought to be.
