I think Mtn. Man's son builds sliders. I was planning on PM'ing him once I got around to it.

Sliders are Trail Gear 67" sliders for Tacoma or 4 Runner. They run about $150 for the pair. Cheaper than what you would pay for the steel.

So what kind of mileage are you getting out of this rig, and do you have any oil consumption or any other type of on-going maintenance issues that one should be a aware of?

13mpg which is pretty much standard for a 2F engine.
It doesn't burn oil but it leaks. It has the standard drips from side cover, oil pan and rear main seal. Most people let the rear main leak until they are down there doing something else that involves dropping the tranny. I'll do my side cover and oil pan later this summer when I upgrade the alternator and put in a new fuel pump.
I have another common issue which is a leak at the rear of the intake exhaust manifold. Probably best off with headers at this point.
If you decide you want to drive a 27 year old carbureted vehicle I have 2 suggestions. Number one is to learn to do a lot of your own maintenance. You can dump endless amounts of money into these things trying to chase down engine issues. The emissions system is a complete nightmare. Toyota no longer makes a lot of the parts for the 2F engine. Number 2 is to just do an engine swap. A lot of people throw in the 5.7 Chevy Vortec. The 2F gets 210ft-lbs of torque at 1800 rpm, which is awesome for offroading to get that much torque that low. But you only have 135HP so you're limited there. You get used to just going slow. Not much can stop you, you just get there a bit slower.
If money was no object I'd take it to the Western slope and have Profitt's Cruisers toss in a new 350 Ramjet paired up with the H55F 5 speed tranny.
It's a perfect rig for going camping offroad. I removed my rear seats and built a storage box and sleeping platform.
It's a classic 80's rig. Everything is steel and bombproof and far as the axles and drivetrain are concerned. And the body styling is just awesome. You don't see rigs with lines like these anymore.
