I've heard of people trying to kill themselves, shoot them selves in the temple and miss the brain, severe their eye cords (that's a medical term) and live.

If anyone has ever read Deadly Force Encounters there is a story in there about a police woman who was followed home by a bad guy one night. He shoots her in the heart with a .44 in her driveway which blows a large grapefruit sized hole out her back. Then she draws her weapon and kills him dead anyway. I am paraphrasing by memory of course.

Anyway, I think she died in the end, no heart and all. But pretty amazing what the human body is capable of. She fought back even though her heart was blown out her back side. I don't think of myself as religious and though I do find myself to be somewhat spiritual, I think it comes down to the medical response as well as (and maybe more importantly) a person's will to survive. I'm sure there have been people out there with far less traumatic injuries and great medical treatment that died because they gave up.

There is also a difference between living and functioning, just because 40% (or whatever the statistic is) survive that doesn't mean all of them have some or any function left. As far as miracles go, well that's not something I like arguing about, she is doing good and miracle or luck that is great.

Most don't use it either. Case and point, 10mins ago my 2 year old was playing with an attachment to my vacuum. She brings it to me and we go to put it back on. I'm trying to jam it in the round spot, sarcastically I ask her where is goes and she point to the exact spot (not where I was jamming it) that it belonged.

I'm a big dumb animal.

I might not have agreed with her on politics but I'm glad she is recovering this well. The brain does have some amazing abilities to rewire itself. ER services have also advanced amazingly. An ambulance is pretty much a hospital on wheels nowadays. When the ER people get their in the the first hour, called the golden hour, they really do work miracles. This would be a open head trauma and hopefully the bullet angled off. (I might be ignorant of details since I haven't been following any of this.)

I learned more than I ever wanted to know about this stuff in August 09 when my wife had an accident. It was closed head trauma and bad. They didn't have to put a shunt in her head - barely. The MRI was terrifying. She spent 10 days in Littleton Adventist and then 30 days at Craig Hospital in Englewood. For all you guys who ride bikes without helmets, it is one of the best rehab hospitals in the world for brain & spine trauma.

Miracle do happen there. My wife was able to walk out and come home and gradually put her life together. Today she drives and is working again. She's not fully recovered, a little weaker and gets tired but is back.

Most of the patients there were from car accidents but there were a couple of bicycle racers there and a woman hit by lightning.

Like I said, miracle do happen. There was one guy there who'd been in an accident and tossed from his car. It broke every bone in his head & face. When my wife was there he was just sitting totally blank, strapped into a wheelchair. When I was back some months later, he was walking and chatting to people. This kind of rehab is also a newer development to help the brain recover.

I doubt if Giffords will make a full recovery but she might amaze people a year or two from now.

Unfortunately, miracles and all aside, they are going to turn her into another Brady "Meat Puppet" and start this stupid, knee-jerk, regulatory BS All Over Again. I really hate to say it, but... Why oh why couldn't that schmuck have just plowed into the Crowd with a Cadillac Escalade?!?

Remember Brady? Capped with a .22 Revolver that the "Brady Bill" had no relevance to WHAT SO EVER! I'm getting that "I'm about to get screwed" feeling again.

It's almost worse for law abiding citizens when a public figure survives one of these attacks! You watch... she will spend a little time "at her post" and then she will hit the Fundraising/Lecture Circuit talking about her "experience". DAMN... she was a Moderate and not in favor of Gun Criminalization Legislation, too! We may have lost her to the "Dark Side"... the MONEY is going to be JUST TOO GOOD!!!
