Default Rules on shooting on your own property

    Hey guys,

What are the rules for shooting on yoru own property? Like going out in your backyard and shooting at targets?
Do you have to have so many acres?
Do you have to be located outside city limits?
Can you only shoot certain calibers?

    Thanks!

I can only speak for where I'm at in Westminster-no projectiles of any kind, including air gun,bb,and archery. I know this first hand when I was teaching my son shooting a bb gun into our shop/shed from the porch and a neighbor called the police. Luckily he agreed what I was doing with my son but said it was against Westminster ordinance and just requested we stop.

Right i figured you obviously cant just got out and shoot in you live in the middle of town.

We are looking at buying a place out side of town with some land, but if you need to have X number of acres to shoot then i would like to know before purchasing anything.

At the time this area wasn't developed so I thought I was okay. I guess your best bet is to contact the authority where you think your buying and get info.

You definitely want to be outside of any city. I live in an unincorporated area and the covenants say no target shooting which is reasonable since the houses aren't that far apart.

People have shot pests, coyotes, skunks and such plus dogs chasing horses and cattle with no legal issues.

If you in an unincorporated area you can get into trouble if neighbors claim your bullets are going on their property.

Even in city areas you can be kind of creative. A company, I think Aquila, makes a .22 ammo named Colibri with no powder just primer. It makes a pop and fires a bullet with a mild bit of force. When I lived in Castle Rock I used it for revolver shooting in my garage.

Never, ever fire a real round from a real gun in a city. About 35 years ago I was at a birthday party in Boulder. The guy's wife gave him a beautiful hunting rifle as a present. After enough drinks he had to try a shot and we couldn't talk him out of it. He fired it into the ground in his backyard. In a few minutes the cops were at the door. After finding out what happened he had a choice: He could give up the rifle or go to jail. He gave up the rifle. I'll bet the rifle never got turned in.

    We need to know where.

    To help you.

What county, is it in a city limits, is it part of a Sub-divion
Some thing also to look at do you have a back drop or can you make one on the land your looking at.

    things to look at
what county and what laws they have
if its near a city they have ordinance
if its in a sub-divion do they have a covenants

    What Bill said-
It all comes down to jurisdiction....

I live in Fremont County, unincorporated (If Penrose was a township, I still wouldn't be in it)... so only jurisdictions are CO state & Fremont county... neither one has rules against it, so I'm clear to blast away (but I'm still liable for where the bullets go and any damage they do)

I own property in another part of Fremont Co. no township there, either- but there is a POA, and they have a rule against it. (go figure, it's even more remote than where I live)

Superior CO = Broomfield / Adams County (i think) and probably has similar rules on "Projectiles" as many other cities. do.

We are looking north of boulder, it is located in the foothills with no nearby neighboors, and is locatedin boulder county, not any where near a city.

I would obviously build some sort of dirt hill to shoot into and with nothing behind it for safety reasons.
