New Designer License Plates ~ Mini Rant ~

As a cop, it really drives me crazy about how many different license plates we currently have for purchase and use on Colorado vehicles. At last count, there were over 150 different plates that could be on a vehicle. The majority appeal to some small sect of the population like 'Adopt the Greyhound' or 'Western State College' or 'Mason Family' (That's Mason, not Manson!). Really? Do we really need all these different license plates?

This is brought on by me skimming through all the bills our legislators seem to think we need to have for new laws this year. In them, I find 3 more bills for special license plates; one for Craig hospital, one for Type 1 Diabetes and one for WWII Veterans.

Now, I'm a vet and I believe in honoring the vets who came before me, but I truly wonder if the person who introduced this bill (Senator Heath) actually thought it out. WWII dates for the U.S. are December7, 1941 through September 2, 1945. So, using my very weak ability to count, a veteran of that conflict, if entering service at 18 in 1945 would be 83 years old today. If it becomes law on August 10, 2011, then that veteran will be 84 years old.

Exactly how many license plates do you think are going to be issued? The bill specifically states the veteran must obtain them for their vehicle only, so they won't be obtained by a history buff like for the 10th Mountain Div plates; it must be the veteran him or herself.

We must figure in the fact that someone on the state payroll must design the plate, send the design to the printing company for a mock up and software to print the plates at whatever facility the state uses now. We must also figure in the payroll of the legislators, the time involved of the legislators staff to keep us updated, printing costs of the bill to go to committee, hearings and then maybe signature, the design costs and the printing costs of the plates in a time when the state doesn't have any money to spend on extra things in order to produce and provide what...100 sets of plates? If that? How many WWII vets do we have still driving?

I somewhat agree but these plates are also great revenue producers for what ever group they support. Most require some type of donation to the cause, either one time or annually.

For some, that's true. For others, they need to 'sell' a minimum amount or they discontinue them. For this particular plate, there is no additional charge (it specifically states that in the bill for one set), and no minimum amount of plates.

I signed the petition to get Craig Hospital on that. They are great people. If the program generates revenue, why not? Just make them all have the Colorado shape.

i think the 10th mountain divsion plates are for posers, unless you are with or were with 10th mountain division. or a family member. now, i see the error my ways.

I love that I pay extra for my DV plates and USMC plates. Tack an extra quarter on the bronco, dog, etc plates for the ones who paid for the freedom. i know i will get hate mail, like usual for this.

You know it is funny you mention 10th Mountain plates. I have had mine since they first came out. Back then you had to provide some proof of association to the 10th (My dad is a 10th vet of WWII-85th HQ S2). I have them on every vehicle and I am very proud to display them. But now any swinging dork can pretty much get any plate they want.
I got pissed one day when the Hadji's that run the gas station down the street had them on one of their vehicles. I asked them why they had them and the reply in broken english was "Oh, it's my wifes car and she likes the design." OK-so then I asked them if they knew any of the history or legacy of the 10th to Colorado. "No" So I explained a little of the history of the 10th and what the Veterans did for Colorado and the U.S. ski industry.
His reply? "Well we dont care about that, my wife just liked the design."
WTF?
I wanted to slap the camel sh:t outta him.

you know if there is a plate you can get without a DD214 that commerates say the D Day invasion, and your father or grandfather was there. cool.

but, here is my problem with the 10 plate. i have met 2 different guys who didnt serve. whatever, thier choice. but, they were both scamming honeys, and I know they were telling them they were in the army, and showing off the plate. some people dont know you dont have to qualify for the plate like a normal Veteran tag. DV plates are issued for being more than 60%, I believe. Personally, I am rated 100%. And I rarely use my plates, as I rarely leave the house.

Off topic but I don't care: what kind of Fudgetard has to lie about military duty (or anything else for that matter) to get with women? *ugh*


Then again, the women that fall for it, probably deserve whatever they get...
