I've managed to stay 100% off the grid with all my arms so far; mailing this rifle to an FFL is going to change all that, isn't? Maybe its time to just throw away my tin-foil hat?

The shipping sounds awfully low- does that include insurance and priority shipping? You don't have to overnight it unless it is a HG as noted but I personally like to get firearms there as quickly as I can. The last firearm I shipped was to Pennsylvania and for 1500 in insurance and 3-5 day shipping it was 42.00 IIRC.
Tinfoil hats are useless anymore- we are all on the "Grid" in one way or another buddy.

i just hand the UPS guy / gal the package with UPS label, a copy of the FFL who the firearm is going to. pay, get receipt and leave. I do over insure it Then e-m and call the buyer with shipping info.
I do insist on a 3 day inspection . this gives you as a seller or buyer protection in case item was not as listed on sale forum.

UPS OOPS lost an FN i sent to a ban state few years back. It showed me item was delivered yet no one from the dealer had signed or received anything. I contacted UPS and asked for signature confirmation copy. They basically said a mistake was made and blew me off. Asked for their supervisor who gave me the run around saying a lost firearm was bound to turn up. Once i mentioned the next call was to ATF the mgr said give me 1/2 hour and will call me back. Funny how quickly they located the rifle, Still on the truck.

They asked what was in the package. They asked everyone in line what was in the package. I said sporting goods.

http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/unlicensed-persons.html more information for you. if you need it.
"Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm".

There isn't a form; you just tell the dude at the counter its a "sporting goods"?

there are other websites out there too...you should check into those. this is a Colorado site. pretty much exclusively colorado people and dealers. the few out of staters either moved here and didn't change their status or moved out of state and still like to talk to us since it is a close knit forum.

Have your tried FedEx? I use the depot off of Havana and they are civilized. They actually seem to be pleased to take money from me, even when I walk in with Uline rifle boxes.

Err, "Postal Money Orders" Who in the hell uses those anymore? I haven't used a PMO since the 80's. I know some people hate them but even PayPal offers a shit load more protection. How about a bank draft/check? I have a copy of my dealers FFL (up in Highlands Ranch) if I were a crook I could forge that to look like it was my FFL. Just sayin man, that is a BIG oh shit moment. Could be 99% real, but 1%? Ya know what I mean? BTW I get offers on craigslist asking if they could send me a PMO etc, etc, etc. One of the biggest scams on CL.
