Nope! I didn't really have friends over by high school though. I didn't get drunk until I was about 19 and 2 years into college. Never really wanted to until then.

How about as a parent you teach your children some morals first, and preventative measures second.

If more parents were in fact parents instead of "buddies" and taught their kids morals, respect and responsibility we would not have kids killing kids over $5 worth of whatever, nor becoming parents at 14.
Got to agree with you on that one! Some parents today are pathetic.

It's funny how when I was a kid in Germany, we were allowed to drink with our parents present. I never did but some of my friends around 10 years old or so always just had a quick sip and were done. Most of the adults would have one or two with dinner etc... But I never recall going into a pub and seeing anyone drunk....

I think if you are presented alcohol in a mature manner and it is adequately explained... it's just another drink to most kids. It's not a "Hey Dude, let's go get trashed!!" type activity like it seems to be in America.

^^^ This. My mom is from Chile and they drink wine with pretty much every meal. I was used to it and knew about it by the time I was 12. My dad has never smoked / drank, not even once in his life. I never took more than a sip of any liquor we had around, and I never threw a party at my parents' house.

same, I knew my dad would find out with those mysterious parent powers I had to develop for my own kids. Liquor, guns, ammo, fireworks... they were all there and I knew the thumb of God would squish me flat if I touched any of them without permission.

I never did try, until I was two months before going into the service. We knew what would happen, and no social worker was going to come save us either, the one night when I did I was at a girlfriends house with her parents and they had the keys.

My parent had no problems with underage drinking -- as long as it was done in front of them. My brother and sister could have beer anytime they wanted (I didn't like the taste but my dad drank mostly American lagers, i.e., swill), we all had wine with dinner on occasion.

I'm okay with the government making alcohol inaccessible to minors (i.e., can't buy without an ID) but I don't think it's any business of the government if the parent(s) want to make it accessible. The proviso on that, of course, is that parents act responsibly and teach their children how to behave -- otherwise throw 'em all in the zoo where they belong.

In all honesty I never did drink or take from the cabinet. Never had a problem with mine as well. I do remember the first time I got drunk (and sick) and it cured me for some time. I was 16.

shit, I remember the first time I got drunk I was 12 years old hanging out with some older boys. They talked me into swiping some of my old man's homemade brew. We took a jar, and went to a corn field. Man it was fun till I got sick. I came home and my pops laughed his ass off, and made me drink 2 beers on top of what I had already drank. Learned real quick about moderation. My old man is still a drunk, and makes his own hooch still to this day. My buddies used to make fun of me and call us hillbillies cause of my dad's brew, but people he has known his whole life who come from out of state to visit him always leave with a jar of his brew. White lightning dosen't do it justice. I am only 25, and never learned how to master it, his way of doing it has been passed down from 3 generations of back woods west virginian methods. Before his liver turns to stone, it is on my list to learn to keep it going
