Back in high school we spent a week fishing on the Grand Mesa. While fishing one mornig we noticed a line of bubbles out in the middle of the lake. Everyone wondered what it was and called for dad to try and hook it. Dad wound up and made one of those Herculean casts that awed us. Lure he was using dropped about 10' beyond the bubbles and just ahead of them. He had lead it perfectly. When the lure bumped the object dad jerked and gave it a good set and started reeling it in. About 15 seconds later a scuba diver surfaced and worked the lure loose from his shoulder, held it up and kinda waved before he dropped it in the water and swam away. We all laughed(but not Dad), thinking the scuba diver was stupid for diving in such a heavily fished lake. Dad didn't think it was funny, huffed that he should have known better, that somebody could have been hurt and stomped off mad and embarrassed. We didn't see him till after lunch.
I still laugh about it whenever I think of it. Nobody ever imagined those bubbles were made by a person while we were yelling for Dad to catch it.![]()
