I know people like most of this users on this board, who are (in general) extremely pro-GOP/conservative, and I hear bitching about the Mainstream Media (MSM), like CNN, a lot.

I know people who are so far left they were chanting "Single Payer" during the health care debate. They bitch about the Mainstream Media (MSM), like CNN, a lot.

I know a few people who are straight up conspiracy theorists, who listen to people like Alex Jones. They couldn't stop bitching about the MSM if you paid them.

I think that idea of debate and discussion has died away in this society. We only pay attention to what reinforces what we believe.

I think the internet has made it worse. Personally, I read far right far left and in between. If I don't read something every week that raises my blood pressure, I'm slacking.

It's titled THE WAR NERD ON AF-PAK: LOSING THE LONG WAR, ONE MAN AT A TIMEBy Gary Brecher[, the War Nerd. The Exile, in its glory days, was wild and always over the top. It's not fun but does get at our difficulty in fighting guerrilla wars.

We like to think of ourselves as the good guys. If we followed what other countries have done, that would kind of blow up the good guy image. Grabbing 50 men, women and children and shooting them for what happened to Sgt. Allen would have been SOP for many armies. The actual number would varied but this was the way it was fought. The Brits actually won some insurgencies by locking everybody up in concentration camps.

what makes me hostile to media is when they just become talking heads spouting their opinion- they are no longer journalists at that point...

all of the stations are guilty of this- but at least some of the Fox shows will bring guests from both sides of the discussion to at least appear like they are trying to not be biased... but anytime I see MSNBC (and CNN for the most part), it's just a couple of talking heads on one side of the issue bad mouthing the other side (with nobody to represent the other opinion, leaving me talking to the TV in rebuttal)

To the uninitiated, it appears that what they're regurgitating is fact, but it's just their flawed opinions...

Another interesting study would be to compare media coverage of the Afghanistan conflict pre 2008 (especially in regards to causalities) to media coverage post 2008 (especially in regards to casualties). Statistically looking at what the headlines used are, what pages they are printed on, and how often a casualty gets coverage and to what extend or viewpoint.

Interesting point. I could be wrong, but it seems like they don't cover the casualties (or the war in general) anymore. And before 2008 they were covering it everyday. Are they selectively trying to make us think it's not as bad? Or did the news cover it more pre-2008 because that's what people were discussing during the elections and now they are discussing other things so the news covers those?

Edit: Does the news make us think about certain subjects by covering them or does the news report based on what they think we are interested in???

I think that MSM is totally biased. They have an agenda, just as every organization does, the only difference, is they broadcast their agenda and sheep take it as gospel...

Look at how many stories there are that are negative on the news.. and every ONCE in a blue moon there is an actual positive story, and they do a little piece on it and call it something to make it stand out... then right behind it.. another negative story.

I honestly do not watch the news.. I look for various news on the internet, and usually from several sources.

A long standing pet peeve of mine is when they call the original agressor in a criminal act the 'victim' once they were fought back against. I don't like how they villify people who choose to defend themselves. I don't know whereTF they get their 'facts' from, some of the things I see are down right hilarious.

The movie 'Idiocracy' wasn't fiction.. it was a premonition.
