Oh yeah, I know I have to file in CA and CO now. Usually do my own taxes, but I'm probably just going to have someone do them for me this year. Got married, moved out of state, etc...

The couple hundred bucks for an accountant will more than pay for itself.

They are busy as hell right now (obviously), so if you want in, you better go NOW.

but one penalty (easy easy easy to make a mistake) more than wipes out the few hundred bucks you save trying to do them yourself.

So I have a quick question... for those who are self employed... do you ever NOT filed extension? It's a tradition for me to pay my tax in the fall of the next year.

Several years ago I messed with the tax man. The tax man has been messing with me for the last several years as a result... I won't be doing that again.

Here's the kicker for me. I learned a lot about the tax system and became quite proficient with tax law due to tax attorney's being as equally large a blood sucker as the IRS. This year I decided to share my tax knowledge with several others and do their taxes for them. I did my babysitters taxes this year and boy oh boy.

My babysitter comes from money and doesn't do much other than babysit for me, work a part time from time to time, and spend family money. My babysitter made $9K this year including the 6K she made from me (and didn't pay taxes on. She paid a few hundred dollars in taxes this year. She got back almost $5K because of the EIC!!

Why do we have to pay so much in to the system? So people making $9K a year can get paid by the system.

    +1 this.

I had been using H&R Block for a few years but got sick of paying their outragious fees. So, in 2009 I tried to get a CPA to do my 2008 taxes but he was booked solid already.

I used to be a Volunteer Income Tax Assistant (VITA Rep) so I decided to do them - using TurboTax.

Two weeks ago I got a certified letter from the IRS indicating that I owe them $8k+ in taxes and more than $1200 in interest and penalties. I've reviewed their letter (which makes no sense to me) and am trying to get in to the CPA who did my 2009 taxes and will be doing my 2010 taxes - and have him review/redo my 2008 taxes to see where things got screwed up.

One thing is for certain: I'll NEVER use TurboTax again!

    8.5 for the rant....

Wonderfully done but I felt it was a little restrained in "good taste". Which is applaud-able.

I make decent money, but with my debt to income ratio it's a penance. The wife and I will owe $1200 this year. Last year I had to pay $300. I don't get it but the tax lady says it's all on the up and up... So now we must scramble to find $1200. We'll survive. No matter how much they rape us it is nice to know that we are not part of the "problem" and we actually try to be productive members of society, etc....
