(Swiss) Society is built on trust between the citizen and the state, he argued.

"If we take away the weapon, which represents this trust, that means that we are breaking the sacred union between democracy and citizen."
For a people who are free, and who mean to remain so, a well-organized and armed militia is their best security.

Yeah, this is great for them...except that they can't have ammo.

So what good is it, really? Other than shoving the anti-gunner's noses in it.

Every society that has it too good for too long falls apart from within because they forget the wisdom of their forefathers and the hard lessons of the past. Apparently these 30% have forgotten that the existence of the national militia is the very thing that has kept Switzerland from being invaded and allowed it to remain neutral all these hundreds of years. Any aggressor choosing to invade this little country would pay a horrible price as they would have to fight the entire country, not just a small standing army. By the time such an invasion was successful, the losses for the invading force would be horrendous and everything of value in the country would be utterly destroyed. Since Switzerland posses no offensive military threat to anyone, such an action is pointless and little Switzerland has been left alone.

The good life, for too long, is far more dangerous than any external enemy. It breeds naivety, complacency, and above all - unwillingness to sacrifice for the greater good. I'm sure a good majority of the 30% who want to disband the army and militia simply do not want to serve. They are too good to be inconvenienced by such outmoded concepts like service to country and sacrifice.
