My dad was a cop/SWAT, after an 18 hour stand-off with a psychotic they managed to get the guy out of the basement alive and relatively unharmed but not before he managed to stab my dad.
We got notification of the law suit from the guy's parents before he was even out of the hospital. Luckily it was thrown out before having to go to trial. Can't sue the parents for not ensuring their adult son who was living with them was taking his meds, though.
Laws are skewed towards the criminals
Growing up both my parents were patrol with Anchorage Police. My dad ended up a LT. when he retired. He shot a guy at one point in his career. It was a Domestic disturbance, guy came at 3 of his officers with a knife, he shot twice center mass. He was put on leave with pay, psych eval, court case, justification, etc.. He said that was the low of his career, never drank so much scotch. For all good cops out there, its not a position anyone wants to be in. You are there to protect not kill. Guy ended up living, all court cases were thrown out.
I feel for both departments, both officers; loss of life and use of deadly force. Its a bad place to be and the family that was left behind, my prayers go out to you.
Having to deal with that aftermath is complete BS.

I've just read the first of three pages of this thread but I agree with sniper on this -PLUS...
I say the family of the slain officer files a lawsuit against the murderers "estate" as well as the parents - for personal liability for the loss of income the officer would have probably provided for the next 20 years, emotional distress and hardship, etc.
The only ones held accountable for their actions these days are those who actually try to do the right thing.

I can be pretty critical of police when they do things they should not be doing.
But when I see a vid of the police beating up a guy that just led them on a long and dangerous high speed chase, I don't mind so much.
like that vid of the guy that killed a cop in an escape attempt, who's family goes apeshit when he shows back up in court all beat to hell after getting caught.
To that family, and the family of this threads aforementioned scumbag I say: "Fuck off and die."
I hope the sheriff tells them the same thing.
To the lawyer, well... I'll plead the fifth on what should happen to him.
If the cop wasn't carrying he'd still be alive. This case could be a Gun Hater's wet dream.
