I saw a threat about one of those uppers exploding and it hurt the shooter, I fired before the bolt was closed and blew up in his face, and i have also read that it can be pretty hard to work the bolt when extracting rounds

I'm pretty sure that was on Calgun.net. I just looked for it and couldn't find it though. They don't have a search feature so I might have missed it. If I remember it wasn't a 50BMG which isn't legal in California. It was some other California legal almost 50.

Ah Ha!! found something about it. This should get you pointed in the right direction-

    Shameless plug coming-
There is a shoot coming on April 29, 30 and May 1. There will be a lot of 50 caliber rifles there (non-machine gun 50s). If you can hold out that long you will have the opportunity to see, fondle, and shoot a lot of 50 cal rifles. I can't guarantee there will be exactly what you are looking for but there will be a lot of friendly shooters that will answer any questions you have. The machine guns are fun too.

I can confirm that a 50 BMG upper resulted in the injury of someone in the Los Angeles area. The link up there is accurate. It tore up his hand really bad. It involved him using a hammer to seat the bolt but I can't remember if it happened during that or after. I do know, however, is that anything requiring a hammer in your range bag isn't a good idea...especially at such a large caliber.

Regarding the CA 50 BMG laws, you can't bring any new ones into the state. Since the lower isn't marked as such (I have a "multi-cal" stamped one for instance) it essentially gets around the law. That's California for you.

I have a bohica upper. I know few others in CO too. Nothing but fun with this upper. The genius who tried to hammer his bolt close deserves the darwin award.

Nice Bohica. I had one in .416 Barret and it was a blast to shoot. Wished I never sold it. Got a New Single Shot DPMS lower in my safe, maybe i'll have to build another one.

I have been seriously considering the safety harbor upper because of the removable mag. I just like the idea of having a magazine.

That Bohica looks nice. I need to look up the .416 ballistics.
