U.S. Gov‘t Software Creates ’Fake People’ to Spread Message via Social Networking

The US government is offering private intelligence companies contracts to create software to manage "fake people" on social media sites and create the illusion of consensus on controversial issues.

The contract calls for the development of "Persona Management Software" which would help the user create and manage a variety of distinct fake profiles online. The job listing was discussed in recently leaked emails from the private security firm HBGary after an attack by internet activist last week.

    Thanks...

I have no doubt they do things like this but I am still always skeptical of any mass media.

The origin of the documents is from Anonymous, a so-called group of hackers. The HBGary dumps are interesting. There are thousands of contract companies like this working for the government.

    http://www.techspot.com/news/42308-a...-with-fbi.html

    The timeline is something like:

    * Wikileaks dumps info that makes the USG sad face
    * Paypal/Mastercard/Visa/Amazon drop Wikileaks due to gov pressure
    * Anonymous takes down Mastercard/Visa -- not through hacking but by having thousands of kids run a simple program (low orbit ion cannon - loic)
    * 40+ kids get 4am no-knock raids because they ran LOIC (lol)
    * Wikileaks threatens to drop a ton of info on Bank of America
    * HBGary needs sales, they and two other tech consultancy companies decide they can infiltrate Anonymous and Wikileaks, pitch this to BoA
    * The guy running the group at HBGary says the wrong thing, and ? totally owns their infrastructure. All emails compromised.

You can download all the emails and decide for yourself if they're legit, or if a bunch of people spent many months carefully constructing a very elaborate ruse.

China already does this, only they pay people .50 cents a post to do it. Seems like it is better to use real people to me.
