Darkside Test:
"__________ is not fair. The government should fix it"

If you find yourself using this statement beware of the darkside.

With a few exceptions like upholding "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness", the government should stay out of our lives and our pocketbook. If they don't then in the beautiful words of Thomas Jefferson:

"When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation."

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it"

How many laws are there to protect us from the government? They are often necessary to counter problems caused by ignoring your Darkside Test.

A mention of the Make My Day and Castle Doctrine laws are what started me thinking about it. They are needed because of laws and goverment persons ignoring individuals right to self defense.

Many of the mandatory sentencing laws were in response to prosecutes and judges letting some people back out to endanger the public.

The Miranda warning could be another example.

I'm sure there are many more.

A lot of laws are started by an emotional response to some event instead of rational consideration.

To bad there is no mandatory common sense law for lawmakers to pass before they take office.
