Default Johnson 3Gun @ Rocky Mountain Local Matches

    Hey all!

Time to blow the dust off!
Our 1st match of the year comes with a bonus, 2 days of shooting 3gun at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton NM! Saturday March 19 (noon) we will hold a 3gun clinic, and on Sunday March 20 (10am) we will have a 4-5 stage match. These two days are going to be independent of each other, so you do NOT have to attend both days. This is the weekend before Superstition 3gun in Mesa AZ.

If you are planning to attend both days of shooting, you will need to bring AT LEAST 200 rounds of ammo for each gun and 25 slugs (this is just my guess). My rule of thumb is to bring more than I think I will need; "Taking left-over ammo home is better than running out of ammo at the range!"

    CLINICS
The clinics will start at noon on the 19th, they will be geared to newer shooters and basic skills, but if you just want to get a little spring wake-up call...anyone can come. Each clinic will have a few minutes of talking/lecture, but the majority of the clinics will be shooting, so bring ammo.

Long rifle - We'll talk a little bit about sighting in iron, 1x dots and scoped guns, and the advantages/disadvantages of sighting in at different distances. Then we'll shoot with however you have them sighted in and work with sight picture at different distances. We will spend a little time with awkward rifle positions and offhand shooting.

Shotgun - We'll talk about loading options, chokes and the different ammo, including how to sight in slugs. Then we'll be doing loading drills of the different kinds and how you can practice at home and on the range. We will spend just a little time with slug shots with whatever slugs you bring with you!

Pistol - We'll talk about pistol fits into 3-gun, show some of the different targets you may see, and explain different scoring systems with the pistol in mind. How to practice at home and on the home range, then we will do a bit of shooting and some drills.

The possible 4th clinic will be about transitions between guns and how to abandon guns safely. We'll talk about the different rule sets and dry practice with slings if you've got'em. We'll get some practice on abandoning guns, reloading and shooting just a few rounds before your next transistion.

    MATCH
    The match will start at 10am (0930 briefing) the 20th, again geared toward basic skills and knocking the rust off;
    1. Long rifle
    2. shotgun, birdshot with a few select slug shots
    3. 3gun, TRANSITIONS!
    4. shotgun/pistol, which target, which gun???
    (5). rifle/pistol, run & gun, then???

If you can, please let us know if you plan to attend either, so we can get an approximate head count. pre-registering is not required.

    Questions? send em!
    see you soon!

Long rifle, as it relates to 3 gun. Most use a AR15. We will probably max out at 400yds.

Fees are $30 for the clinic, $30 for the match.

One more question, what time does the match finish up? I will have to work monday that why I ask.

Its nice to see you on here JJ. For anyone that wants to goto a top notch 3 gun match the Johnson's put them on. I was sad you stopped doing the Johnson 3gun at PWSA, but putting on two big matches is not easy I'm sure.

We have had 2 "local" matches at the Whittington Center, the first in Sept was done at 5pm (everybody was beat) and the 2nd in Oct was done at 3pm.
I would suspect this match will be done at the more reasonable time of about 3. The 1st match in Sept 2010 we were so giddy about shooting local matches at the NRAWC we designed some killer stages, but ALL 5 were killer stages, and they just about killed all of us who shot...
I don't like to design 20 second stages, driving 200 miles one way to shoot 100 seconds seems like a waste to me...so I go for the gusto and sometimes get spanked for it.
Be asured these will be NOT be 20 second stages, nor will they be 10 minute ones either...

    sorry bout the rambling answer...

I've been shooting 3 gun for a year or two now, and this seems pretty interesting. I'm on the Colorado School of Mines trap team and we might be attending a competition at the Whittington center on the 18th-20th (trap two days, sporting clays the last). If we do attend, I'd probably skip the sporting clays on the 20th and shoot 3 gun instead because it's so much fun.

Just so I bring enough ammo, is about 100 rounds per gun and 15 slugs a good amount to bring for just the match?

100 per and 15 slugs is my normal load for a local match, and is exactly what I tell others to bring.

    Default April 2nd 3gun match

Guess what? We are doing it again this weekend! I know, 2 weeks after the last one...and a week after SMM3G...

This Saturday, 2 April 2010, 5 stage 3gun match at NRA Whittington Center. $30. Shooter's briefing starts at 0930, newcomers briefing starts at 0900, at the pistol berms. If you are not familar, as for directions at the gate. Remember once you get to the gate, you are about 15 minutes from the area where we shoot. don't be late, shooting starts at 1000, we usually are finished with shooting and cleanup at about 1500-1530.
We will have longer rifle shots out to 400 or so, along with the normal compliment of mixed stages. (all shotgun, all rifle, shotgun/pistol, rifle/pistol, 3gun) bring 100 rounds of each plus 15 slugs and you will probably take a little ammo back home after the match.
Earily arrivals who help set up will get a discount! If at all possible any help will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks, see you soon!
