Default Question about round counts on used weapons

I'm not a collector, just someone who loves firearms and loves to put rounds down range. I'm wondering how so many folks when they list their weapons for sale have what seems to be fairly accurate round counts. If I think about my AR (unlike so many here I just have one lowly AR and a pittance of just 10 or so firearms - I feel so inadequate ) I couldn't tell you how many rounds I've put through it. Even on my seldom fired weapons I could maybe guess but it would only be a guess.

During the recent ammo crisis it was easy to keep count rounds fired, NONE ! You just bought all you could when you could find any and just horded it and kept telling everyone that you had none.
With the weapons that I have purchased new, I have a decent memory as to when I have shot them and an approximation as to the number or rather boxes of ammunition I put through them.
As far as the weapons that I have bought used, I really don't have a clue as to how many rounds have been fired. I try to guesstimate by the condition and wear.

Between my AR and my 10/22 I don't even want to think about it. Some of them I keep a rough count

Remember the rule of three! If they say "it's about 500 or so" then it's really like 1500!

Most of my guns I can guesstimate to within fifty rounds or so. My Glock 17 would be to within a few hundred or so. I have several thousands of rounds through that 17 and I have taken very good care of it. But if you look in the right places you can tell that it has been used a lot.

I buy the rounds, shoot them and when the box is empty that's how many I shot.

Well I like ranger only having under a dozen guns guess that I really have a case of OCD when it comes to keeping track of rounds. For me it's kind of a history a gunfax if you will. After every time I shoot I just count up the empty boxes ( I as of yet don't do any reloading) then I just add the totals to an excel file. My obsession even reaches as far has trying to have a even number of rounds fired (ex. My 30-06 has 129 fired and it's driving me nuts). Also when I break down the gun after shooting I inspect it thoroughly and if any thing doesnt seem right or I have something new I take a photo and do a compare (told you OCD).

Bob Said it right about the used and surplus guns. I take what the previous owner tells me and evaluate it against the condition of the gun and usually I add about 50-100% more than what was said the round count depending how well I know the last owner. I will say this though every deal I have done here has been on my opinion with honest owners that kept decent track of that info.

Well Mazin, just step out to your back yard and pop off a round of 30-06 and you will be at an even130.
It'll take the Brighton PD about 20 min. To respond, and by then you can be out milling in the street with the rest of the neighbors acting confused as to where the sound of the shot came from.

I have no clue. I guess I could try and do some math but on some it might be a little difficult.

My Fal's it would be comical. Barrel #1 made in 58 and ask the Germans how many rounds. Then ask the Turks that bought it how many rounds. 43 years later I bought it. Second best shooter I have.

I am of a mind that condition and how it shoots are more important than round count. I have had a new barrel on a gun that shot like crap and after being "worked on" a few times still shot like crap.

To be honest it scares me when someone says that they have only shot 100 rds in 5 years. Tells me that they do not like the gun for one reason or another.

Around here the guns that are fun and accurate are the ones that get shot. I do have a couple that are fun to shoot because the ammo is cheap but they are also pretty accurate as well.
