I guess they had to pick one of the "American Haters" out there but choosing North Korea/China over say a Taliban/Iranian foe made more sense? The original was very plausible because the tension and threat was real at the time. Taking a different angle and telling the story of a ground attack when everyone assumed it would be nuclear was genius IMO. Accompany that with some good up and coming acting talent and you have an entertaining movie. That genuine fear factor can not be reproduced with today's foe (especially N. Korea) and is why I think the remake will likely fail. But I like blood, guts and kicking ass so I'll probably watch it!

I think part of the reason for this silliness is that MGM WANTS this film to fail because it doesn't reinforce leftist dogma.
Also, just how much of Hollywood is owned by China these days?
Political Correctness = Cultural Suicide
Modern liberalism is based on the idea that reality is obligated to conform to one's beliefs because; "I have the right to believe whatever I want".

A World Without Guns <- Great Read!
How about making Walmart the evil aggressor? Oh wait, that would be the Chinese too. Plus they already are evil aggressors.
I doubt MGM is going to drop a few mil. on a movie and then want it to fail. They are in the business to make. Political statements are secondary.

The original didn't completely suck -- Patrick Swayze's character was a bit much but Powers Boothe was pretty good as the downed pilot and any film with Lea Thompson was good by me back then.
At least the concept of Russia trying a land invasion to get the resources they needed to feed their people wasn't totally laughable back then but the idea that North Korea could invade anything further than 100 km from their border is just comedic. Remaking the film seemed stupid to me but these cosmetic changes are dumber than dirt.
That is an interesting social commentary on where we are today. Back when the original was done, it was the cold war period. Not that a soviet invasion was likely but one could almost see that.
In today's political climate I just don't see any major threat in that same manner. China wouldn't invade. We already owe them alot. It would actually be counter-productive to them to do so.
Space aliens? Been done and still being done... Maybe it just doesn't need to be rebooted...
The story would have been better if they kept it with the Cuban's and the under ground secret soviet old guard that was in control of Russia's oil wealth.....

Its about money. If they could make equal or more leaving it as it was filmed, you don't think they wouldnt?
Its always about money.
Mom's comin' 'round to put it back the way it ought to be.
Anyone that thinks war is good is ignorant. Anyone that thinks war isn't needed is stupid.
