More DIY motorcycle questions YAY!

Alrighty then! So I started the bike up again today and took it for a quick ride (no crashes this time). But now I'm left puzzling; my idle problem still isn't fixed. Here are the symptoms:


A) Is really hard to start. Takes about five or six crankings of the engine to actually get it to run.

B) The weather's warm, right? I still have to pop the choke on all the way to get it started. When it starts it revs REALLY high (scares the s**t out of me in the process).

C) I adjust the idle screw until the bike idles at about 1300-1500. Runs fine for the moment.

D) After actually riding for a little while the idles go WAY back up again to around 4000-5000, surges when I put the clutch on (yes, I'm letting off the throttle when I shift).

E) Adjust the idle screw again at a stand still, and the revs go back down again.

I'm thinking I just didn't clean the idle jets well enough. It's a big "no-no" but I'm thinkin' guitar strings in the jets, since the Seafoam didn't work.

did you winterize it or run it with the gas off until it shut off on its own before storage? sounds to me that the needles are sticking and the carb needs to be cleaned out really well. probably gummed up pretty good.

also make sure you have fresh gas in the tank. double check your spark plugs or put in new ones.

the carb sounds like the biggest culprit though.

I don't know if "I" (a.k.a the guy I bought it from in February) had it winterized!
I'm thinking you're right though; it really sounds like the carbs. *whines* Buuuuut Mawm, I juuust got 'em out and cleaa-eanned them.

Alright, enough horsing around. I'm off to clean the carbs!

Just because it is 'warm' out right now.. does not mean that at night.. when the temp drops into the 30s, the heat is retained... and unless it's sitting out in the sun...chances are it's no where near an 'ideal' temp to start..

You wanted a toy.. you bought a toy.. take it to TFOG give him something to do so he stops spending his days on the interwebs Toys aren't cheap.

Mine is 'stored' for the winter.. it's up on stands in the garage, gets started once a week, has a battery tender on it, and fuel stabilizer.. gets an oil change before it goes away and after it comes out (a few nice days does not get it out of mothballs).

Had I been more active on the forum last year I'd of taken the bike to him to get new shoes, and a chain on it...

Hey buddy, I had a similiar problem with my harley. It ended up being fouled plugs. I would foul the plugs almost every week and it would act the same way you described. What I was tolr and it worked great is this
When you start your bike, pull out the choke only til it starts, once it starts, immediatly push the choke back in and only use the throttle to keep it running. I would leave the choke out too long and doing so it would dump excess fuel in the carb, thus foul the plugs.
Give that a try and let us know!

That was my first thought, too. But chances are very good you still have something in your idle circuit that doesn't belong.

winner winner Sheen dinner. .. I didn't read your first thread, so I'm not sure what bike you bought. but your symptoms sound very much like a vacuum leak
