I think Jordan was being sarcastic, hard to tell sometimes.

I'm well aware of the size of the universe, and the Drake equation, in fact here's an awesome way to look at it:

I do think there probably are intelligent alien species out there, in fact that statement is probably as close as I come to "faith", however I don't think they're going to come in triangle shaped ships, at night, with red marker lights. If a species has the capability of interstellar travel, they'll either visit here and leave no trace, or come with no subtly, ala Battle LA or District 9.

I don't have proof that road flares were what was seen, of course. It's not dissimilar from what was seen in Phoenix a number of years ago, and someone there admitted to conducting the prank. I think the fact that they're red, non-equidistant hints at that being what it was.

I'd love to have some kind of LIDAR stations that could confirm whats up there in these kinds of events. Maybe old WWII style search lights. Something along the lines of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starfire_Optical_Range ... there's another I can't remember the name, essentially it's a global network of automated cameras that constantly scan the sky with a wide field view, looking for flashes, and when they discover one that's more than a few hundred thousand miles away (triangulation comes in to weed out aircraft and the ISS/satellite flashes) they will automatically send messages to a bunch of telescopes to slew over and check it out. It was designed to locate things like Gamma Ray Burst sources, super nova, etc.
