Smile Rem 870 mag extension 8+1

Has anyone tried the socket method on the recessed ring at the end of the magazine extension? You know, the part of the mag extension that you put your screw for the barrel clamp.

Would getting rid of that indention make my 20" 870 an 8+1? I'm just not sure the magazine spring can compress enough to fit 8 rounds. Just wondering if anyone knows or has tried....before I start pulling out sockets and heading to the shop press and destroying my factory +3 extension.

    THANKS!

Although I've not tried it myself my gut tells me your odds are not good. I have used a ball bearing to press out the dimples at the end of a mag tube but those are just small dimples. I think the "socket method" you are thinking of is in reference to those dimples and extended mag tube installation.
The problem you are going to face is that "groove" is deep, it runs the full circumference and the wall thickness. When it is formed the metal is stretched. How do you propose to shrink that stretched metal without distorting the nearby tube? I don't see it being done without wrinkling the metal and or bending the tube.
I see the odds of getting a socket stuck in a close ended tube high as well.

Not saying it can't be done and I am sure it has but I would be curious to see the results.
