Byte,
I take complaints, bitches and gripes about my profession seriously. In some cases, there are perceptional stereotypes going on, on others, people bringing in their own biases to play.
I can't justify most things people say occurred in their interaction with law enforcement. I can say I've taken it extremely personally when someone lies in court about my action and behavior, only to have the in-car video show them to be liars. It still pisses me off.
It doesn't help to scan YouTube for a video of an idiot cop from back east or back south, where the minimum standards for law enforcement is breathing and 18, to try to show how bad cops are. I can't justify the 1,500 cops in the city of Denver who are still policing like it is in the 70's; they give the other 6,000 of us in Colorado a black eye and embarrassment. There are some good cops in Denver, but they are not the norm. That's roughly 7,500 local, county and state cops (not including the DOC and sheriff's deputies in the jails) for a population of 5,029,000 (2010 census).
So, to find one, two or three videos and listen to a couple of people gripe about interactions they had, doesn't really say much to me, given the number of daily contacts between people and law enforcement, the number of cases filed in the municipal, county and district courts on a yearly basis.
I don't fit the mold as you say, but frankly, neither does the vast majority of law enforcement in Colorado. We all are painted with that broad brush regularly here.

Bullshit. If I have said it once, I have said it many times. 85% of LEO's give the rest of them a bad name.
I know that a few good LEO's are out there. I can tell you this, a good LEO is not one that basically does his job right and fails to report the f*#@ed up LEO's. I've seen it and I've heard it a thousand times. There are LEO's out there that would never do what the others do but they won't stand up to or report the others because of thier fu*!ing code. They are just as bad. This country needs an enema and it's coming soon.
Not sure when I met you?? Maybe at a build party???
Anyways my statement of all cops being slightly or fully indoctrinated was a bit over the top and I apologize. I have seen very good cops and I have seen very bad ones. I was pulled over last week for speeding and we were both pleasant and respectful and I left with a warning.
I would say about 1/4 of all my cop encounters involved a cop with a piss poor attitude and a feeling of entitlement and elitism. Thats not a good record.
I have had an officer pull me over because HE SAID I LOOKED "SUSPICIOUS" and then searched me and my car after I informed him he does NOT HAVE my consent. His back up officer said, "YOUR GOING TO SIT THERE WHILE HE SEARCHES YOUR CAR AND YOUR GOING TO DO NOTHING ABOUT IT!!!"
I have also had an officer pull me over for no front license plate and then tried to search my car and then stopped when I informed he did not have my consent.
Both were asses but only one obeyed the law. And all of my negative encounters were in Chicago suburbs. I have never had a bad cop in the 4 years I've been out here so maybe its different???
Like I said in my first post. I understand a need for law enforcement but I am seeing more abuse and indoctrination. Here's an example:
My coworker recently completed the police academy and we were BSing about guns. I told him that I eventually want to get some sort of 50BMG. His reply was , " What do you need that for?" My response was "Because I want it!"
About a week later I was talking to my boss about what my coworker had said and he says, " Well thats kinda funny. I was talking to my brother, who is the captain of the city PD, and I was telling him about my new AR-10 I just bought" His reply was, "What do you need that for?"
What I'm seeing is a "We can have them, but YOU CAN'T!" mentality.
All I can say is preach the ideals of individual liberties of mankind to other officers and maybe we can make a difference.
Remember that the police are granted their just powers by the consent of the citizens.
I've met a few Denver cops who were decent people . . . but I've met over a dozen who I wouldn't trust to work as a night watchman at a construction site. You've got some scary, out-of-control policing going on in Denver. This city is notorious throughout the country for bad cops, and I've met some of them. I know lots of citizens here in Denver who will not call 911 unless they truly have no other option because they are more scared of the DPD than the criminals. This is not irrational paranoia. The LAST time I called 911, during the course of my work, when the cop showed up he gave me such an attitude I really thought he was going to kick my ass and take me to jail. I wish I could say that was the only negative encounter I had with the DPD. A bunch of fucking psychos.
I'm NOT anti law enforcement. I've lived in numerous cities and have interacted with good and bad cops in each. I can state, with some authority, that the DPD are in a league of their own. One of the reasons I'm considering moving out of Denver is because of the way the DPD behaves. I've heard too many stories of DPD beating the hell out of citizens for, literally, no legitimate reason, then confiscating or destroying witnesses' cellphones and filing false charges against the victim. The courts aren't much better. I was in traffic court last year and the judge was so whacked out of her mind on pills she was laughing uncontrollably and could barely sit up in her chair. And let's not get started on Denver's "special" laws that they don't seem to want to publish anywhere the average citizen has access to them. This city disgusts me.
I'm probably gunna need to knock on wood right after this ..............
BUT
I've NEVER had a bad experience with a cop in colorado, Well one I didn't have coming ( doing a 110 just south of castle rock resulted in a VERY loudly screaming and pissed off state trooper... but I had that coming. Still only got a ticket for 90)
I deal with cops a bunch in my industry. from having to have people arrested for fighting in the clubs to working with them at street festivals. They have always been polite and nice.. always fun to work with and have a laugh.
Maybe since I'm mostly an automatic "Good Guy" ( I'm the door guy at the club, The Festival Contractor, so on and so on) That I don't see a bad side. but again anytime I've been pulled over I've gotten a less ticket then I could have gotten, or a "BS" let off ticket. Like pulled me over for speeding but gave me a no insurance ticket ( had insurance but didn't have a CURRENT card with me ... got dropped in the clerks office for free the next day) Doin 43 in a 30 and only written for 38 ( a much much cheaper ticket) Even when I earned my self a DUI a few years back the Adam's county guy was not rude about anything pure professional.
I MAY have seen some stuff that was letter of the law improper..... but I also believe in "contempt of cop" .. you call a cop a " fucking pig" and tell him " I pay your paycheck" .. then resist when he decides you get to go to jail for disorderly conduct .. and get a bit roughed up while going to the ground to get you in cuffs... well you had that coming.. shouldn't have been an asshole and you would have gone home.
I've seen more people TALK themselves into jail then I care to count... and I find it funny as hell every time. ( true these people are drunk and even dumber then normal I'm assuming... )
Now I'll admit I "dislike" traffic cops... it's a cat and mouse game and I hate losing. but when I do lose.. I smile, joke, and laugh with the officer and well the last time I got a ticket ..... about 3 years ago and I've been pulled over about 6 times since then.
I know this post is a bit disjointed and skips around abit but I don't see the same stuff Clint sees. And I've lived in central denver for 18 years now. Almost always in District 6.. with a bit of time father east in D3.
Again... Maybe I'm just lucky.
