Congratulations on your decision to serve. It seems to me that you are probably old enough to just read techniques and go try them out yourself. I can swim (was on swim team) but can't think of how I'd teach someone else other than just saying, "Do this.... Now practice that a lot. See you next week."

Link with info on the boot camp swim test

And if you're going in the Coast Guard I wouldn't worry about it. You don't mention how tall you are but if you're over 6 feet tall and the ship goes down you can walk back to shore. If you're under 6 feet tall they issue you SCUBA gear.

all joking aside I wish I'd taken a closer look at the puddle pirates

I stopped by the YMCA last night, and for a seven week course, it was only $42 so I'm gonna do that. Gotta wait until one month after my surgery though before I swim at all.

And thanks for the comments; i'm excited for it, and I'm going to be ready for it when I go. My plan is to wait until spring, which will give me time to get in awesome shape. Plus, by then I'll be a student again, so I could go directly to officer training, so we'll see. I'm gonna try to go meet with a recruiter sometime in the next few weeks.

Good luck with the lessons. You'll be a shark in the water a year from now.

Double check every thing they say and see it in writing. There are some good recruiters out there but mine screwed me pretty good. The military may require 6 months to a year after your surgery to make sure it's healed up properly so check into that.
