Perhaps as individual entities, but I believe grants to college research departments collectively would be a larger dollar amount. I'd have to research it to be sure. There is also the DOE National Labs, e.g. Sandia, Oak Ridge, Fermilab, etc... and NASA. More recently we've been seeing "Challenges" used to get a lot of good research kickstarted on the cheap. For example, the DARPA Grand Challenges in autonomous vehicles, NASA runs several (lunar regolith, space elevator), and the (non government) Google Lunar Challenge, and the reusable private suborbital ride that Scaled Composites won.

US companies benefit from this research. Many of them don't do pure theory research anymore, because the return on investment is too long range to keep Wall Street happy, and that's a sad thing. IBM and Microsoft both dumped large amounts of cash into R&D, and I think it'll start paying off for MSFT in the next couple years.

I bet if we looked at that "where did my tax dollars go" site I posted a few weeks ago, added up every bit of R&D that the government pays for, it'd only be a few dollars out of our pocket. I'm totally OK with that.

Interesting fact: before current (ridiculous) tax rates and (ridiculous) regulations were in place, most medium-big and larger companies could afford (and did run) their own research departments.

The reason you see so little privately funded research is because the government is taking that money and using it for other things. Which is then used as a justification for...publically funded research.

Its an awesome con game when you think about it. Cause a problem and then propose more of what caused it as the solution.

Just to clear something up. Stem cell research isn't banned, just it being funded by the taxpayers. There is plenty of funding for the research from private parties, and I don't really agree with the taxpayers paying for something that isn't completely proven to work. I've been looking into getting a stem cell transplant but I can't afford to go to Germany, Costa Rica, or somewhere to get it done. I just wish the FDA would approve the treatments so it could be done in country.

And I don't claim to be in the know on where the funding comes from, but it is being done nontheless.

But on the other, I wouldn't really mind that particular law... all these kids walking around with their pants so far down they can go take a piss without adjusting anything just look ridiculous.
The thing is, some old prude wanted to file charges against pretty girls with thong underwear. Same guy wanted to yank the liquor licenses of restaurants and clubs on the beach that allowed girls in bikinis through the doors. Law was shouted down by Black community leaders who said that showing dey underwears be, like, part of dey culture and dey be all oppressed by racist po-lice. So now the pretty girls can wear their thongs without being arrested.

Buddy of mine had a miscarriage and he went out of his way to ask, and then donate their unborn fetus to stem cell research. No abortion involved.
