Math huh?

If an airplane takes off from LA at a climb rate of 500 feet per second at 400 knots, climbs to an altitude of 30,000 feet, circumnavigates the globe at the 34th parallel at 600 knots, has a rate of descent of 1,000 feet per second at 500 knots, and lands back at LA, how far has it traveled wheels up to wheels down?

At first I was going to be sarcastic, but I got a little bored waiting for the firewood guy to deliver, so I took a stab at it.

My answer is 17,179 miles, and if you are generous enough to give me a 3% error of margin, that gives 16,663 miles to 17694 miles.

So, how close was I?

Nope, the question was how far did it travel wheels up to wheels down, time doesn't matter. If I was supposed to take into account holding patterns before landing, the question would have given some sort of info on that.

Eta: My answer of distance is not ground based distance, it is actual distance flown. So if it flew 1mi directly upwards, that would be 1mi, etc.

HA! Math is VERY easy for me, and that calculation is almost one I could do in my head (calculator yields a more accurate shim though). I at least want to know EXACTLY how much it was shimmed. Heck, for all I know, the scope bases are already not level, and that could cause a lot of problems.

Break out the calipers and measure the shim you put in there. Do the math from there. Changing 0.007" here makes how much of a difference 100yds away from here.
