you cannot over stabilize a bullet.

the weight of a bullet isn't the key part about twist, its the length of the projectile. Longer projectiles (heavier) stabilize better with faster twist.

so: a 55 gr (because of the projectile length) can be sufficiently stabilized by a 1/9 twist. A 77 gr can also be stabilized by a 1/9, but you can get better LONGER RANGE stabilization and accuracy using a 1/8 or 1/7 twist. A 55 gr can also benefit by a faster twist.
Good points, Belly. I was wanting to touch on bearing surface, in my ramblings yesterday, but I knew that would start to get me in over my head pretty fast. I feel like I have a pretty good handle on the theory, but many of you guys have far more actual knowledge/experience.

In short, the LENGTH of a bullet (and longer = heavier in general) the more air can disturb the bullet. Higher rotational stability is needed to prevent the disturbance. A faster twist barrel provides the necessary rotation.

Think of how much rotation a really short top may need to remain upright if you blow air on it, vs how much rotation would be needed to keep a much taller top stable.

Barrel length affects stabilization only by virtue of loss of velocity affecting rotation speed.

Looking forward to reading this.when I can do it on something larger than my phone.
