My thumbs cant type fast enough on my little keyboard on my cool smart phone and I cant spell to save my life so it takes me a lot longer.

Sorry BC, but I'm no help either. HB junior is just getting to the age where we're saving money for a decent safe.

No worries. I miss my safe. Sold it when we sold our home because the buyers didn't want it (but I hope they enjoyed the four 3/8" threaded rods sticking up from the closet floor that mounted the safe to the concrete slab). I didn't have a reciprocating saw and sure as heck wasn't going to buy one just to remove those things. They didn't know about them and they didn't want to see the house again before closing when it was completely empty.

Sadly, we won't be able to get another real safe until we buy another home. Since my job is grant funded, I don't know what will become of it after we finish building the instrument and deliver it south. I could be relocated to another university somewhere to start building another or I could stay on here.

BC, get one of those hidden shelf/drawer units like TimK builds. Instead of mounting it to wall, buy cheap plain jane night stand and mount on it.

Well, none of my guns are any more dangerous to HB Jr than a hammer sitting on a shelf, but as he gets older and stronger, we'll have to come up with a good solution to keep his paws out of trouble

Growing up, I very often had dreams of living in a big awesome house, and every time, without fail, the house would be haunted. It'd be haunted, or I'd find a secret sey of rooms but the devil lived there, or I'd have the coolest room in the house, but something evil that absolutely hated me also occupied that same room. Every time I dreamt about a house, it always had something wrong with it.

Hypothetically speaking, HB Jr joins a gang at 5yo. His gang friends come over and HB Jr points out your pistol sitting on a shelf. HB Jr's friend, Timmy, says oh cool check me out and picks it up, accidentally shooting poor (but thugged up) Adam and killing him. When the cops show up, Timmy, who pulled the trigger isn't responsible, you are, because you left it out where a gang member could access it.

Now, HB Jr's gang friends come over and find a hammer. Timmy picks up the hammer and starts swinging it around, and accidentally hits Adam in the head, killing him. Adam's devastated parents don't come after you for leaving a hammer around, they go for Timmy's parents who should have taught him not to play with tools.

While a little ridiculous, its the reality we live in. I would be perfectly happy with a nightstand and an electromagnetic hidden drawer. Flip the switch, magnet releases, pistol pops out and ready to go. But if I can flip a switch, so can a toddler.

Sorry, bear with my ridicoulous scenarios, I am mentally fried from lack of sleep and the ridiculous problem I'm working on at work, for which common sense doesn't apply to this type of problem.

eta: Timmy and Adam are both fictional characters. Their fictional parents were not devastated at their loss as they are fictional and do not actually have emotions. Furthermore, HB Jr is not a thug, nor was I implying he would grow up to be one. Lastly, no bunnies were harmed in this hypothetical scenario. Liberal tears on the other hand, were probably shed as the story involves guns.

Cheap stack on units work in a pinch. Some sheet rock around it gives it some fireproof abilities too.

This is what I'm leaning toward.

I certainly understand the lunacy of this reality, and I will prepare for it as necessary, but we've got a couple of years before HB Jr's thug friends start coming over to hang out.
