You mean not wrapping his thumb around grip? I think that just speeds the process of cycling the bolt and getting back on the trigger.

Its not a grip, it's a hold. I'm driving the rifle with my shoulder AND pulling it in with my hand. The trigger finger operates independently from the rest of the hand.

I get sympathetic squeeze when my thumb is wrapped. The thumb also helps with fast bolt work, but if bolt speed is your only issue, I think you're doing ok.
