All you need to know is contained in that one sentence. Monetize your YouTube video in the dashboard settings to make money off the ads. However, you can't get paid unless you set-up an Adsense account as well. Many people have videos with thousands of views that are monetized, but have never seen a cent because they failed to set-up their Adsense accounts.
I think you get something like $1,000 for every million views. Maybe it's every 10 millions views. My most viewed stuff is only in the 10,000 range so I don't know for sure.

doesn't it also pay you if you have a certain number of subscribers, how long it is (more ads), and "likes" ?

might have to set up this up and start subscribing to videos and upload something that will go viral.
