Our people are good people; our people are kind people. Pray God some day kind people won't all be poor.

We just had fifteen minutes worth of a rare drenching rain at our Central Orchard Mesa farm east of Grand Junction. I've been pump irrigating for three days but the brief rain matches the effort and is far more widespread in effect. All the plants and animals will get a boost from this. Insect life will burgeon and the birds and other animals will benefit in turn. Water is life in so many ways.

This afternoon I watched a juvenile Mockingbird bathe in the water basin outside the kitchen window. A Blue Grosbeak was calling on territory from the greasewood along the canal below, and Lesser Goldfinches were singing while feeding on thistle in the yard. Four days ago American Kestrels, America's smallest falcon, fledged four young from the nest box on the house. The whole family group is now hunting the farm for mice, lizards and large grasshoppers. Gambel's Quail which have suffered mightily from the drought and local feral cats were here calling from the brush pile in the yard. More rain, please.

Mostly hot and dry up in the PNW. Forecast to be 100+ this weekend.

I?m sure fire danger will be all over the news, which brings out the kooks who set fires.
