    Default ak-74 builders

hey guys i'm gearing up for another ak and this tme it will be an ak-74, arms of america is one of my prefered vendors that i use as they have always treated me well, have decent pricing/selection, whoever is making their us made barrels dos a fantastic job, and they have lately become a colorado business so they work with guys on customer pickup.

they had some elk river ak-74 receivers on their site for i think 63$ but i called mike at aoa today and he said they are now sold out, he also told me that they are considering not ordering any more since that first batch too a while to sell and he isn't sure about interest. so i figured i'd gauge interest since at 63 bucks and allowing customer pickup (they're in the co sprins area) those receivers seem like a good deal to me, plus they have proper mag wells and don't have x'ed out serial numbers like the bargin over run nodaks. i told mike that between my and another on here we would be good fo 3-4. I'm not trying to have guys speak up for any and commit but i am just seeing who would probably be interested in them if they did decide to order more

also like i said their barrels are very well made especially for the cost, they show the option of hard chrome plating the bores/chambers on all their barrels except for their 5.45, i'm not sure if they just haven't updated their site yet but i also emailed mike if that was possible, then it make the price of the 5.45 to about 90-95 dollars not bad for a us made chromed barrel. when i find out about chroming their 5.45 barrel i'll post for people to know.

    thanks everyone

I've been thinking about a new one but I have no $$$

Apex has their barrel less kits for a bit cheaper https://www.apexgunparts.com/product...oducts_id/1659

For the barrel I would prefer the original bulgarian chrome lined with the port already drilled.

I emailed arms of america today about picking up a ak74 kit and elks receiver and was told they were out of the receivers and I couldn't pick up the kit, but they would ship to me. I guess they like you better!

youre right about apex and i've heard those apex kits are very nice, trading my very nice apex tantal kit to 68 charger for one in fact lol

yes the bulgy barrels are nice for sure i still vish venders still had the virgin german 74 barrels, those are my favorite (only have one slated for my shorty) those aoa 74 barrels would be good for somone looking for a compliance part as far as aoa's 7.62 barrels they are very very well machined and the journals were right on the money, in fact with the polish profile one i used if it was parked and had the proof and journal stampings it would even fool a polish armorer (i was able to compare it to a real polish barrel one in each hand and with calipers and all very very nice barrel for the money)

yeah i was looking forward to getting an er receiver too, by the way the first transaction i did with them after they moved to co was buying 4 cases of yugo m67 paying in cash and i called and asked mike if i could pick up and i was paying in cash, they are working on putting up a store front but he said he'd work with guys for pickup but you probably gotta call and remember cash is king. if he gets more elk river receivers in i'll just stop on the way and grab you when i go to pick up mine so you can get your stuff too haha

I did get one of the Apex kits with a US barrel in the package so I'll be doing a 74 at some point.

I don't even have a round yet but I assume it would pass being shiny brand new. It has the gas hole drilled, extractor cut and lower handguard cut. The kit also looks great. This seems about as good a deal as I've seen nowadays.

I might turn up at a build party looking for help getting the parts pressed on and in the trunnion. I don't think I'll be building it for awhile but I'd like to get that part set. It is pressed pretty tight to the barrel pieces. I'd be amazed if the pins end up usable. Better get some.

What is the difference between a Tantal 74 and the Bulgie as far as barrel? Those kits look nice.

the difference between a tantal barral and a 74 barrel is the tantal has a 14mm lh theaded muzzle and in front of the threads a 1 inch section potruding forward to stabalize the long grenade launcher/brake and i believe that the gas block journal on a tantal goes a little bit farther forward to support the bipod mount on the front of the tantal gas block. a 74 barrel could be used on a tantal but the muzzle would need threaded and the bipod mount on the front of the gas block might have some gap between it and the barrel also i would advise a non drilled barrel as even though tantal parts are ak74 pattern the tantal uses an akm style front sight block so the pin holes will be different than a 74 an there's might be a pin hole slot visable behing the tantal sight if a predrilled 74 barrel is used. also green mountain is going tobe doing another run of tantal barrels soon i heard they should be for sale in july sometime

It might be worth picking up a Tantal kit now and waiting for the proper barrel. The quality of the Bulgie is really impressive. It is heartbreaking to see the sliced up barrel. The butt stock is a lot light than the front wood and not much of a color match so I suppose I will be breaking out my refinishing dtuff. The muzzle brake is quite a piece of work. Well made and it looks like it does a lot. I haven't seen US made ones so I'll probably stay with it. That means for 922r I'll have to do something else, probably the pistol grip. A shame since it looks unused.

I pushed out the barrel pin and got the barrel out of the trunnion. I got the rear sight pin out in good shape but the right sight is still on tight. Having kits with barrels I've never studied up on that but I'd better start. I degreased all the pieces and got a bunch of penetrating oil on them. It would be great to get the barrel set at the party. This could be a great looking AK. Need to get going on parkerizing.
