    Question Ar15 Id Help

Greetings from Indiana. I am looking for some help identifying an AR 15 that I have had for some years now. I am giving it to my son and would like some info on it. I traded a Remington 870 trap even for the AR. The receiver is marked--AR15-A2 govt.Model cal .223 Ser. GS00841 The barrelis marked ONP 5.56 NATO 1/7 It does not have a bayonet lug and is finished in a light greenish-grey parkarized smooth finish. The magazine that came with the rifle is aluminum, same finish and is marked on the floorplate Parsons Presicions Products Parsons Ks. USA. I believe that I got this back in the late eighties or early 90s but not sure. I've noticed the barrel is heavier than my FAL. I would appreciate any info as to what age and ballpark value. It has been shot very little and is in very nice condition. Thanks for your help.

Take a picture of the markings on the receiver and barrel and post them. It would help a lot in the ID.
Mom's comin' 'round to put it back the way it ought to be.

It sounds like you have a Colt Gov't Model A2 (maybe an AR6550). Check the barrel markings again...it should say "C MP 5.56 NATO 1/7".

That also sounds like a Colt serial number. But the Colt logo and name are usually prominently stamped on the left side of the receiver.

If it's the model I think it is, it would've been made some time after 89 and before 94. If the gun is a Colt the magazine you have is just a military contract aftermarket magazine. Any magazine that originally came with the rifle will have a Colt floorplate.

Depending on condition it's worth is in the ballpark of $900 - $1100.

You can go HERE for a nifty chart of the various commercial AR-15 models from Colt.

Yes...it probably does if it was made post 89. It's easy to look...just swing the upper receiver open and look behind the hammer. If there's a black piece of steel filling the void behind the hammer, that's the sear block.

It'll look like this if it's blocked:

Bailey I am looking at my AR as I type this and there is nothing behind the hammer, no through pin or bind pin as your pic shows. There is nothing in the space between the hammer and the break down pin. It appears there was never a block as there is no holes in the receiver to accept a through pin or a bind pin. I know pics help a lot but I can't get this older computer to co-operate. If I can I will send a pic. Is this gun legal?. I guess this was made before 89. Bailey thanks for the help
