Try checking into the little cabins in South Fork. South Fork is 17 east of the Wolf Creek Pass Summit on Hwy 160. Lots of rafting, jeep rentals, fishing.
You might check the town out on the internet. They also have little cabins and camping in the woods. Just an Idea. It still gets pretty cool in the mornings and also have afternoon rain showers.
Not sure what you consider expensive but there's a ton of places to stay here ... lots of little B&Bs (and one of the best hotels in the western hemisphere, the Broadmoor ... followed by The Antlers downtown ... but I expect that these fall into the "expensive" category).
The best views and best access to the tourist areas are going to be on the west side (particularly the area known as "Old Colorado City" and Manitou Springs).
Here's a couple B&Bs that aren't too expensive.

And a couple nice little mom & pop west side motels*

and a couple of big chain motels on the west side
Best Western Manitou
Comfort Inn Manitou
And here's a good place to look over the lodging in the Manitou Springs area.
*Note that you have to be careful about which places you stay on the west side because there are motels that cater to tourists and motels that cater to drug addicts and prostitutes and often you don't figure out which it is until you get here (if the Motel is on Nevada Ave, run away).
If you have any questions about specific places, feel free to ask me via PM.

Well, it's been a few weeks. How did she like the mountains? Colorado Springs is a GREAT place to see a big mountain right on top of you too.

Oh yeah, I forgot about this ... how did the trip go (assuming its already happened)?
If you haven't made it out here yet I'm reminded to remind y'all to make sure you drink more water than usual while up here. My nephew came out a few weeks ago with his girlfriend (who also had never been to the mountains) and we kept reminding her to drink more water ... like most girls she ignored us and ended up with a mild touch of altitude sickness (just a little nausea, but it spoiled a bit of her fun...especially the morning we drove up to Woodland Park for breakfast at The Hungry Bear)). Of course both she and my nephew are athletes and we ran them ragged with lots of hiking and a trip up the Cog Railroad up Pikes Peak (which I highly recommend BTW) so we probably made it a bit worse.
