    Default Norinco SKS

Alright gents, here's the deal. I'm going to be making a little extra on my next check, and I decided that now would be a good time to get my hands on an AK like I've been wanting. I told a friend of mine from work, and he offered to sell me his Norinco SKS. I think it's a D model, which is to say that it was originally manufactured to take AK mags and has no stripper clip guide. That's what I gleaned from the research I've done thus far. It's also got a thumbhole stock and some sort of optic mounted to it (I can't remember the exact type but I can't imagine it's too expensive).

My buddy wants $600 for the rifle, 4 mags, original cleaning kit, and a "crapload" of ammo (his words). I'm coming to you guys because I know virtually nothing about the SKS, and even though this seems like an alright deal to me, I just wanted to see what the more knowledgeable folks' opinions are before I jumped on it.

GEDIT: Ok so "crapload" means a little over 3000 rounds.

Sounds like a great deal! The ammo is worth almost $600. It might me a "M" model seeing it has the thumbhole stock. The SKSboards site has all the info you should need. Here is a linky http://www.sksboards.com/smf/index.php?topic=440.0 I just bought a used "M" model for $369 Not a cherry one though. "M"'s have a 16 inch barrel with no bayo lug (post ban) "D"s have 20 inch barrel with the bayo lug and are generally worth more than "M"s

Yeah when he said exactly how much a crapload is it sweetened the pot quite a bit, and I'm thinking it's an M model. Thanks for the help!

While the SKS-M is originally made to utilize AK mags the one you are interested in is the late "post-Ban" version. this has no bay lug a funky block where the cleaning rod goes in and "some" have had issues with slam firing. I wrote some as not all of them did or do for all you thumbhole sks owners.
The TH stock or any SKA using ak mags will not be a swap for any standard or aftermarket SKS stock, different magwell, trigger group set up.
For $600 you could get a basic SAR / WASR 1 some mags and ammo OR build your own AK for say $300 average

here is one looks like it gas already been spoken for YMMV

I'd have to look at it again and see if it has that block. I agree with you on the WASR though...basically my plan right now is to go to my favorite gun stores in the area and see if they have anything I really like in my price range, and if I don't see anything then I'll go ahead and get the SKS.

Buy some ammo and get a free gun. Doesn't get any better than that.

SKS-M and 3K rounds for 600? Sounds like a deal....if you don't want it send the deal my way

You can use aftermarket stocks as long as you don't mind the duckbill hole lol. A little modifying is necessary to use drum mags in them though.

Yeah well that's one of the catches to the sale...if I ever want to get rid of it I have to go back to my friend or his brother in law first to keep it in the "circle" if you know what I mean. It's not like I can buy it and turn it around for a profit.
