You guys are on the right track. The keys in the "knox box" are only accesible by the fire department. Each fire department has a unique key so a key from Denver would not work in Cheyenne.

Usually the boxes only have keys for the commercial occupancies although if a homeowner wants keys installed thats up to them. A lot of really nice houses have their own boxes with keys in them. It all depends on weather or not the keys are updated too. A lot of times the keys in the box are old and no longer work

Any decent fireman can force a door in quick order with tools but these keys come in real handy when its a false alarm or someone has a medical condition and cannot get to the door. No sense in ruining a $2000 door for a false alarm.

The flip side is that if someone gets ahold of one of those keys they basically have the key to the city. It will open every box in the city. Some of the boxes are wired with a tamper switch that will dispatch police when they are open, others not. Ive been with the fire department 9 years and we have never lost a key but it could happen any day.........

My biggest concern is about the people who know how to make keys by using the lock cylinder itself. What if one of them decided to take the time to crack a lock box key and then have access to all the box's? No tin foil hat here, my middle brother is serving 35 years for all of the robberies he was convicted for (and a few other things) using such a tool... Anyway, what if?
