So I recently (today) picked up my first handgun, a Sig 229 9mm.

The gun is brand new, still in the plastic, and of course has a nice coating
of residual oil from assembly and shipping. Do people make it a habit to
clean a new guy before a trip to the range or is that something better left
till after a few rounds have been through it?

I plan to at least wipe off all the surface oil, but do I need to field
strip it clean the whole thing?

Here is a pre-wipe down picture.  I can't wait to get to the range.
