Funny, I've never had anybody stop to help when I've been on the side of the road.
I always ask simply "Need a hand?" and leave it at that.

A few years ago, my hood flew up on I-70. So the hood was very obviously up, since it was peeled over the hood of the car on the side of the road.

I sat there with no help for nearly half an hour on a saturday afternoon, until 2 Denver and 1 Aurora cop all show up at the same time (was on I-70 East just turning on to 225 south).

Then they just argued over who's jurisdiction it was, because none of them wanted to deal with it/me.

I saw a taxi cab over heating the other day, and I asked him if he needed some water since I had a 2 liter of it in my car. I would have stopped to find out if he needed it, but I was working and was already late on my run from sitting on F'ing Federal for 15 minutes during Cinco De Mayo.

    "What's the problem, flat tire?"
"Nope the other three just swelled up on me"

I feel your pain. People are full of "loaded" questions. Like when I have an ATM on my trailer and some dumbass comes up, "can I use that"....of coarse it's plugged in and connected to the network

I break down 10 miles from my house. One person will stop. Eight people will ask if I had car trouble that day.

"Yeah I did , why didn't you stop."
"Oh, I saw someone stopped to help so I kept going."
"Yeah, but YOU could have helped."

Not complaining, just found it funny.

Try to get anyone to stop and "help" anymore is ridiculous. A woman pushing her car on a busy street will not even get a response.

It does. I'm even a whole year old than when that happened. (on paper)
