    Here's the way I look at it.

    When you fire your weapon at another human being you are doing so to stop a threat. If you succeed in stopping that threat, you are likely going to take that person's life.

    Am I going to shoot at someone for stealing my yard furniture? My Mailbox? My car?

    No I'm not.

    If they point a weapon at me or I feel my life is in danger, then I will vigorously defend myself to stop that threat.

    I personaly think he should have done time for attemted murder, do to the fact the guy was running away. There was no threat and in fact no reason to chase after him, much less shoot him. What he should have done was got the plate number of the car, description of the guy who shoplifted the vodka, and called 911, with the last known direction they were going. I would bet my bottom dollar they would have been pulled over shortly after, and the vodka would have been recovered in there possesion, and bam bad guy in jail, and shop owner not in hot water. Now there is no way of knowing if that would have gone down that way, but imo it should have been handled that way.
