Default Six Months After Tucson Shooting, White House Readies Gun Control Stance

    From Fox news yesterday...
"Whatever direction the White House takes, the president emphasized that something has to be done, "None of us should be willing to remain passive in the face of violence or resigned to watching helplessly as another rampage unfolds on television.""

If the POTUS wanted to be tough on Gun crime he would mandate tougher sentences on those that commit crimes with guns.

Commit armed robbery and kill someone? Have a seat, this is going to pinch a little, you might feel a little burning.

Kill someone out of malicious intent? Have a seat, this is going to pinch a little, you might feel a little burning.

we dont need more laws that the criminals dont care about.
we need laws that will get rid of criminals

Yeah, but if the POTUS wanted to be tough on Law Abiding Gun Owners he'd just continue on the path he's been traveling since forever.

Yeah, and I still say Vin Diesel is grossly over rated.

I talked to a very avid 2A loving, republican history professor a couple weeks ago and he came up with a theory:
If POTUS/Congress/etc. passes laws that make it so only police and military can own guns, and we all criminals will totally disregard those laws, then we will see a large influx of law enforcement and military, overloaded dispatching centers and law enforcement officers, and crime rates skyrocketing making the violence in places like Prohibition-era Chicago look like an 4th Of July parade. Law-abiding citizens will become victims of crimes that normally weren't at risk... anarchy will follow shortly thereafter when the police decide that this is just too much. Either that or we'll just have a coup and get a whole new government.

The real answer is in a small scene from Atlas Shrugged (the book ... dunno if its in the movie as I haven't seen it yet).

"Did you really think that we want those laws to be observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want them broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against - then you'll know that this is not the age for beautiful gestures. We're after power and we mean it. You fellows were pikers, but we know the real trick, and you'd better get wise to it. There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted - and you create a nation of law-breakers - and then you cash in on guilt. Now, that's the system, Mr. Rearden, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with."

It is not going to go down like that at all.

I believe that, eventually, concealed carry and private party sales of handguns will be prohibited in all 50 states and mere possession of an autoloading rifle or hi-cap magazine will be a felony offense. Gun ownership will go underground and these laws will be selectively enforced against specific targeted individuals and groups. I do not think there will ever be random house to house searches in this country, but I do believe that informers will be awarded cash payments to point out homes where unauthorized firearms are stored, and if you have an unauthorized firearm there will be no defense to that charge and mandatory minimum sentencing. Give it another 5 years.
