Rockler's has a good selection and sells small pieces.

Paxton's used to sell small pieces too but I haven't been there in years.

I have no idea on tools locally.

Woodcraft has stores in Loveland and Centennial. They have lots of tools and wood. http://www.woodcraft.com/stores/Defa...te&location=CO

Try Austin Hardwoods as well. Woodcraft is OK but pricey. I will ask my son where he got his Ironwood for his Nunchaku's that he made
As far as checkering tools either Midway or Brownells are good sources.
Practice on scraps before you go to the grips you spent hours on.
Some exotic woods such as CocoBolo and Lignum Vitae are poisonous, especially the dust from sanding and can be real irritants to the skin.

I second Austin as well. I use them for guitar woods.

There used to be a wood shop, across the tracks, west of downtown Loveland. Haven't been there in years but it was very destructive to my wallet.
