I picked up a S&W 22a-1 pistol on Saturday evening for $152 + $10bgc fee... from Cabela's if you can believe it. I was very surprised to see it, as I was not previously familiar, and intended to get a Ruger MarkII/III or Browning Buckmark style .22lr, which would have been twice the price. It will be used almost exclusively for training new shooters, assuming it's reliable enough. I should be able to get out and shoot it this coming weekend. Anyone have any experience with this model before?

Mine took a while to break in (lots of stovepipes, feed jams), then it was fine. It's been a fun shooter, and nicely dependable since. Had several mis-fires last range trip (primer struck, no ignition), but was able to attribute that to the ammo.
I'd buy another, without hesitation at that price.
Only potential drawback as a training piece might be bulkiness of grip, for smaller hands, and mag release location (just because it's slightly different than most).
Pros: Weight makes it easy on recoil, without feeling heavy, and slides on these are generally pretty easy to manipulate.

I appreciate your reply crays. I had my suspicions that it might have ftf/fte issues, but i'll take it apart and polish the ramp, square the extractor, etc.. it is extremely lightly used, so i imagine the first owner just got fed up with it before the break-in period was met... I'll shoot some mini mags through it too help it along too. For the price, I was ok with spending an hour or two tuning it up before using it anyways. I agree 100% with your pros, and can accept the drawbacks you mention as well.

Glad I could offer up some useful info.
I know mine had me pretty frustrated at first, and it sat at the back of the closet for while.
Ironically, I must have put it away right as it was becoming a shooter, because when I finally got around to pulling it back out, and giving it a good cleaning, it's been reliable since.
Go figure...
Happy Shooting and congrats on a good score!
