actually I believe the point is, that in accordance with the laws of Islam we are their enemies, regardless of our feelings about them.

Christianity was once interpreted that way too. The dark ages were the same for us as today is for many of them.

As an example at one point in time the opening words of the Koran were interpreted in a much different way. I can't remember the specifics of it. Came from a book I read a long time ago on the history and changes.

But at one point the opening words of the Quran were interpreted as God (Allah) created the world for you to learn in. But today it is interpreted as the only thing you need to learn is within the Quran.
