I've known for a while now that Denver is against OC and made it illegal, but it's legal everywhere else, which is dumb and I think we should rally to change that.
Colorado has something in it's constitution called "Home Rule" for municipalities (as I understand it, some other states do as well). With regards to this conversation we had last month, Denver fought the "Firearms Preemption Law" passed by the state, using Denver's "Home Rule" status. Essentially as I understand it, "Home Rule" allows some autonomy to a municipality and also, I believe, allows some municipal ordinances to carry force of law (I'm not a lawyer, so I'm not 100% on this part).

    To Alxone,
I wouldn't Open Carry in Denver. Unless you are trying to make a political statement (and that may not be that good of a reason), there's no good reason to. Tactically it's unsafe and it's illegal. If you don't have a CCW, go fulfill the requirements and get one. It should cost you around $300 for training and the application fee and take around 90 days to get the permit once you submit your application. You will be much better off Conceal Carrying than Open Carrying.

it doesn't matter if you're legal or not, you can not trust that the denver PD won't teach you a harsh lesson.

Not really... I don't know why you all seem to buy the news and all think Denver Cops are so heavy handed and are such a holes. I bet you guys believe the news when they talk about all those fully automatic rifles and handguns that are used in crimes here! There was a lot more to all those recent incidents involving DPD then they broadcast on the news and put in the paper. In one of those incidents , specifically the Denver Diner, the entire incident was within Denver PD policy and none of the cops I know (Those cops are not just with DPD they are with other agencies including out of state ones) think they did anything wrong. The reason for termination was the Manager of Safety felt they were being dishonest because they said AB&C happened in this order covering all points but actually AC&B happened in that order. When you get mobbed by a group of people it's not easy to remember if you cuffed up person one or two first and if you had to push person 6 away before spraying person 4 with pepper spray. Anyone who's been in a fight before knows that after it's all over you probably won't remember if your 6th punch was a jab with your left or a right hook.... I'm just really tired of all the cop bashing by the media and how DPD and APD are all considered thugs by gun owners who should know the media is full of it rather then eating up everything they say.

Now that my rant is done.....Denver Officers hired 2005-2007 were actually instructed in the academy to lay off Open carry due to the home rule dispute with the state and the court case. You would likely be told to put it away as long as you checked out okay and would probably only ever see charges on it if you decide to have an attitude and refuse. On the other hand it's never wise to ignore the law even if you don't agree with it.

I'm not a fan of OC anyway because you no longer have surprise on your hand.... Example you are in a bank/store during a take over style robbery (they are on the rise). Five suspects enter the store armed with long guns and hand guns. They see you with your gun visible on your hip you now became the first target. The BG could also mistake you as a Police Officer since most of society thinks cop when they see an openly displayed firearm. A CCW is the way to go so you have the advantage of not being spotted and ID'd as the first guy to shoot in the above situation. If OC was really a good thing don't you think most off duty cops would carry in the open and agencies would mandate it?

COLOSHOOTR, you lost me when you put media sensation and gun owners in the same sentence.
