    Default .22LR Steel Dogs Match – September 17, 2011 @ WHAC

On September 17, 2011 at 9:00am we will be holding our first ever .22LR Steel Dogs Match at the Wildlife Hunters Assoc. of Colorado Shooting Range (WHAC). This match will be based on our monthly center fire Steel Dogs Match where we engage Prairie Dog Steel Silhouettes measuring approximately 13” high by 4” wide at distances ranging from 200 yards to 600 yards.

For this .22LR match we will be engaging a smaller version of this PD target measuring approximately 6” high by 2.5” wide at distance ranging from 35 yards to 150 yards and we will have four separate strings of fire. On all four strings the shooters will begin the course of fire in their desired shooting position (from the bench or prone) with their rifle loaded with 10 rounds and the rifle's action closed.

String No. 1: On signal, the shooter will engage 10 targets in ascending order with one round each. The targets will be set at: 35yd (35pt), 50yd (50pts), 65yd (65pts), 80yd (80pts), 90yd (90pts), 100yd (100pts), 110yd (110pts), 120yd (120pts), 135yd (135pts) and 150yd (150pts). You will have a maximum of 3 minutes to engage all targets. The clock stops when you have fired your 10th shot (fired at the 150yd target). If you hit your intended target, you will get their assigned point value; if you miss it or if you hit a target out of order, you just don't gain any points (no penalty for misses).

String No. 2: On signal, the shooter will engage 10 targets in descending order with one round each. Starting with the 150yd target and ending on the 35yd target. You will have a maximum of 3 minutes to engage all targets. The clock stops when you have fired your 10th shot.

String No. 3: On signal, you must hit all 10 targets in ascending order. If you hit your intended target with your first shot, you get its full point value. If you don't hit it on your first shot but you hit it on the second shot, you receive 50% of the points. If you don't hit it on the second shot and you hit it on the third shot, you receive 25% of its value. If you don't hit your intended target on your third shot (or if you skip it), you will not receive that target's points value and you must continue shooting the next farthest target. You can bring to the line as many magazines as you deem necessary but each magazine can only be loaded with a maximum of 10 rounds each. You will have a maximum of three minutes for this string of fire.

String No. 4: On signal, you will have one minute to rack up as many points as you can. You can engage the targets in any order you like but you can only engage each target once. If you hit it on your first shot, you get the target's full point value. If you miss it, you must engage a different target. Whether you hit or miss, you cannot engage the same target a second time.

In case of a tie, the shooter with the shortest cumulative time (for all four strings of fire) will get the win.

We will have two separate divisions: Scoped Rifle (no magnification limit) and Open Sights (post & notch or peep sights).

<IMPORTANT> This match is intended only for .22LR rifles (semi-auto or bolt action). <IMPORTANT>
PLEASE NOTE THAT .22 Mag, .17HMR, .17HM2, or any other rim fire or center fire cartridge WILL NOT BE ALLOWED.

The cost of this match is only $10 per shooter and it will be limited to 40 rifles/shooters. If we have the space, you may shoot up to a total of two rifles but one must be a scoped rifle and the second must be an open sights rifle.

Here's a copy of the targets we will be shooting.
It's approximate dimensions are 6” high by 2.5” wide.

I know man... It's a bummer but it's the only day that we had available.

Oh yes we do! So far it looks like we only have about a dozen shooters though I expect more to sign up soon.

I would definitely be interested, but I broke my wrist a week ago so I can't hold a rifle. Sorry I can't make it, sounds like a bunch of fun!

We hope to generate enough interest to make this into a monthly event. At the very least we will hold this match several times a year. Hopefully you can join us in the near future when your wrist is healed.

alas I do not own a .22lr Rifle.
For years I resisted the urge to purchase a .22LR and, when I finally did, I was immediately hooked. They are not just fun plinkers but also great training tools.

Call your wife on the phone right now and let her know that you need to purchase a new rifle ASAP. You will not find a better excuse this year to go out and buy one!!

On a separate note, this coming Saturday we have our monthly center fire Steel Dogs match. I hope to see you there!
