    Default Job Killing Illegals

It gets real tough to hold to your beliefs when it hits your pocket book. I'm getting some work done on the house and have been collecting quotes. Here is a real example:

    Non-citizens quotes for a job $800, and $1150.
    US-citizen quote: $1850.

I didn't even take quotes from another half-dozen other Mexicans. I could only find one American in my area listed on Craig's List (brick work).

Dang it hurts; but I'm going with the American even at twice the price. I told the guy the situation and he says he deals with it every day. The Mexicans bid real low. And after 17 years it's getting harder and harder to get jobs. He agreed to take $200 off and do it for $1650. And did I mention he speaks perfect English?

Keep in mind that 9 times out of 10 the $800 job done by the illegal will need to be redone in a few short years by the $1850 citizen.

I know the stereotype is that all the general contractors love the cheap Mexican labor, but I know plenty of contractors that refuse to hire illegals because most of them do crap work.

If you need a ditch dug or some trash hauled off, sure they'll do just fine. But for skilled work, don't scrimp.

The Illegals probably don't have insurance and take cash they don't report. It's much cheaper to run a "business" if you don't pay these expenses.

Ronald, that is bullshit! But in a world where you get what you pay for good for you for going with the American, it'll be quality work. My friend is a general contractor and he has five guys working for him, not one is illegal, but he says he constantly gets outbid for jobs because of all the border hoppers that low ball on the bidding war. We need this fixed soon, I'm getting sick of seeing honest, good, hard working Americans getting put out of business or having to cut back because these illegals come here and screw us over. I would have reported the illegals to INS, not that anything would have happened but if they get enough complaints and our congressmen are made aware of the situation it might be a start.

Thanks for "going with the gringo" (nobody get pissy here - I'm referring to citizenship, not race). You put your money where your mouth is

Just watched an all Hispanic crew put my neighbors new roof on and I wondered exactly how many of them had real documents...?

Well, I was hopeing for a warm euphoric wave of goodness to envelope me. But I guess that only works for liberal nut jobs that are saving the planet. I'll be satisfied at trying to do the right thing.

There's a guy on here that goes by "Caplock" I think. I met him last summer doing brickwork on the entrance to the park I live at. He said the illegal workforce is hurting him big time. As already stated here I would absolutely go with him on a skilled trade job before I went the cheap route. Just saying

I had a guy come out to quote refinishing my hard wood floors. He seemed like a good knowledgeable guy so I hired him. The day that the work was supposed to begin 4 mexicans showed up and only one spoke any English. I was not pleased with the end result. What did I learn? Always ask if they will be doing the work themselves or bringing in a "home depot" crew.
