308 for Elk?

Shot lots of moose and caribou with a 308.

there is nothing on the North American continent that hasn't been taken with a .30-06 the .308 is virtually identical in performance. Either round is ideal for hunting. Very predictable, hard hitting good speed. I always contend it's not the caliber of the gun it's the caliber of the shooter.

If it were me, I'd get a quality 165 grain or 180 grain bullet. I'd practice and know I was good out to 400 or 500 yards. 300 yards is a piece of cake, 400 takes a little practice and 500 takes a little more pratice. Finding a quality round that shoots good at 100 yards out of your gun, is a good start. Then use a ballistic chart to help you move out farther. A ballistic chart is no replacement for a little practice but it sure makes it easier and takes out a lot of the guess work.

I have always found that the bullet that shoots the best at 100 yards, shoots the best at 500 yards.

308 is plenty of good medicine for elk.

i like 7mm but ive done it with 308 when i was younger it works great to its a great caliber i want to try 338 lapua before i die tho at least a 1000 yard shot on a trophy

Yes, that's what I use for my 30-06. Going to try to reload some as well. Pretty good load IMO.
