Might as well be throwing rocks then.
We used to shoot a course (different agency) where the final stage of fire was 50 yards. Granted, we were shooting semi supported against a barricade or from the kneeling while semi supported against a barricade. Most pistol rounds will still do significant damage out to 100 yards, even out of short barrels. The biggest problem is the inability of almost all shooters to consistently hit even man sized targets past 50 yards. Put some stress and make the scenario dynamic and shooting < 5" barrel pistols over 25 yards and I can't help but question your thought process. Use the right tool for the job. This is what submachine guns were developed for, 35 to 100 yard shooting. SMGs can and are used at closer distances very effectively, but they don't conceal very well and tend not to be very comfortable over prolonged periods of time. Pistols can be used at distance greater than 35 yards, but they are difficult for average shooters to place rounds on target with any consistency, and they increase the possibility of hitting innocent bystanders.

I'm sure there is a ballistic app available that would compute the force of any given round at any given distance out of a 5" barrel. Should be a simple physics problem.

That said, if anyone wants to bring some density targets (milk jugs, phone books) they would be welcome. I would like to see someone who can consistently hit a milk jug or phone book at 65 yards with a compact pistol. That would be impressive.

Is this actually happening? I have heard rumblings from some members who are unhappy about it being scheduled for the 24th, a Tanner GunShow day. Because of this, some members who want to will not be able to attend. Could we push it back a week or 2? Or is this locked in stone?

Ok I have to admit, today at Pawnee I was trying this. I took 3 8" round steel plates that have bases welded on the bottom. Sitting on the ground from 50-70yds they are a bear to hit! I was probably 40% on them. But my misses were normally within a couple inches just left. in the 20-40yds range I was bale to hit more like 80% of the time with out to much effort. This was a stock Glock 17. This was slow shooting with no distractions (us old people cant hear distractions you know). I would have had the wife get a video but it was pretty slow boreing stuff

As Jim said, we are doing it this Saturday morning because we can. Everyone is welcome. I'm sure there will be some bugs to work out, but it is only an informal match. For additional information, see the Swagler's Challenge thread that Jim posted a link to. I will post some GPS coordinates and directions to the old missile site just north of Rt 14 and about five miles west of Briggsdale.

That said, I would be happy to do this again at a later date, especially after I've had several practice runs this Saturday

I know targets can be engaged at this distance and I really look forward to being impressed by some of the awesome shooters who post on this board.

For those who can be there, see you this Saturday. For those who can't make it this Saturday, lets start talking about dates and locations for Swagler's Challenge II.

I will post the times, location, and strings of fire again in the Swagler's Challenge thread.

I will get there about 8 and like to start shooting about 9. Depending on who shows up, I'm sure we can squeeze in a few late comers. Just don't show up at 1 PM and expect me to leave the targets out only for you
