They taught us this in history classes. JFK was the one i remember when he ran for the pres, all his heroics coming out. You know, Cliff Robertson who portrayed him in PT109 just passed.
You left out G. Washington, Andy Jackson, US Grant to add a few others.

As to what happened to us, IMHO.
The media morphing into the web. America does not mind soldiers doing what is necessary to keep them free.
They do however freak when the killing is in real time.
The "enemy" went from a defined group to enemy combatants who don't wear uniforms, have US Attorneys and politicians tell us they are entitled to the same constitutional protection as US Citizens do. Yet the same bleeding hearts feel we should do away with guns, for the good of the people.
